Humans of New York

Humans of New York

A while ago I stumbled across this amazing Photography project by New York based photographer – Brandon. Quoting Brandon – “Humans of New York provides a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.”

In the summer of 2010, Brandon set out on a goal to construct a photographic census of New York City. I thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants, so I set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map. I worked for several months with this goal in mind.”

Along the way, Brandon’s project – HONY, took a completely different turn. Brandon started curating stories and quotes from his anonymous New York City subjects. He started including these small stories and quotes along with the portraits on his blog. “Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, which over the past two years has gained hundreds of thousands of followers. With over 300,000 followers on Facebook and 120,000 followers on Tumblr.”- Brandon

Brandon curates his portraits and short stories of New York City on his website – humansofnewyork.com & Facebook page –  facebook.com/humansofnewyork  I have followed several of his portraits for weeks and now months. Leaving aside the Photography aspect of this project, what really amazes me is the kind of stories and quotes he captures. I have seen everything from brave, compassionate, heartwarming to inspirational content in Brandon’s work. His work is pure and unadulterated stories of folks from New York City. He captures some amazing portraits that sometimes tell a visual story even in the absence of textual content. I find his work non subjective and very inspirational. Checking his page daily is now a habit. There is always something heartwarming or encouraging one can find there. Armed with a camera, Brandon manages to really tell stories of the inhabitants of the City.

I really find his project inspirational. His work is a proof of passion & love for what he does. To  see his entire set, check his Facebook page or website. If you love stories then this is for you – Stories. Recently Brandon, even went out in aid of the victims of Sandy. He set up an indiegogo page to collect funds for the relief of the victims of Sandy. Brandon in collaboration with Tumblr built a beautiful relief campaign for the victims of Sandy.

HONY & Tumblr Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser

HONY + Tumblr

Extract from the indiegogo page:”Tumblr and Humans of New York are teaming up to raise money for the victims of Hurricane Sandy. For ten days beginning November 11th, we will be documenting and sharing the stories of those affected by the storm. We hope to show all sides of the story, featuring not only the victims of the storm but also the first responders and volunteers who are helping them recover. Hurricane Sandy revealed the power of nature, as well as the power of humanity. We aim to document both. By doing so, we hope to encourage YOU to contribute the relief efforts.

The purpose of this fundraiser is to collect donations. However, to spice things up a bit, Tumblr and HONY are teaming up to provide incentives and rewards for donating. Tumblr is throwing in some cool Tumblr gear, and HONY is providing prints and other goodies. We are covering these expenses ourselves so absolutely all money raised will be going to relief efforts.”

You can check it out here.

It’s not every day you see someone like Brandon following his passion and curating stories from strangers. His project assumed a different direction along the way, but I love it. And I think a lot of you out there would agree with this fact. Humans of New York is without a doubt among the best photography projects I have seen.

Brandon, keep doing what you do.

Rock&Roll.

About the Photographer : Brandon

Brandon in action

Hey there.  I’m Brandon.  I get really passionate about things.  At some time in my life, I’ve been obsessed or borderline-obsessed with saltwater aquariums, the baritone euphonium, reading, piano, filming, financial markets, New York City, and photography.  I studied History at the University of Georgia.  During my senior year of college, I took out $3,000 in student loans and bet it on Barack Obama to win the presidency.  A friend heard about this bet and got me a job trading bonds on the Chicago Board of Trade.  I traded for three years.  It went really well for a while.  But then it went really badWhoops. After I lost my trading job, I decided to move to New York City and take portraits of strangers on the street. Mom wasn’t too happy about that decision, but so far it’s gone pretty well. I’ve taken nearly 5,000 portraits and written 50 stories. And I’ve met some amazing people along the way.Feel free to drop me a line at bstantonphoto@gmail.com.

DNA – designers + networks + analysis

Its always hard to find that one particular website or network that caters to all our design and creativity cravings. Over the past 2 years, I have bumped and stumbled upon several design shacks and creativity hubs. Some good, while some plain boring. In today’s  world of ever changing trends and styles, keeping up with the latest is not an easy job. Today people don’t want new and refreshing content. They want different and innovative content. Yes the age of  snapshot tutorials is slowly fading away. Its time to usher in the era of webinars, video tutorials and market places. Several sites and networks today attract their 20,000+ subscribers by new and interesting means of interactions. From interviews and case studies to live streams / event coverage and software reviews. People have even gone ahead and started broadcast, hangout sessions to making monthly podcasts available.
For all those thirsty designers and creative mind out there, I have rounded up a few interesting and out of the box networks and designers whom I personally follow and love. From Photoshop to Illustrator , these sites have everything from typography, UI design to Infographics and sound editing. Also a couple of interesting designers whose personal style and work have caught my attention. Its hard to rate them in an order of preference or rather it would be wrong, as each of these hubs have something different to offer. Dig in right away!

Creative commercials 2011

As this year of 2011 draws to an end, I figured why not do a post on  some of the most creative audio/visual content that hooked us through commercials. The advertisement industry  has seen various creative strategies to develop Television commercials this year. From advanced VFX to musicals to even awesome Cinematography. I am not here judging any successful or failed advertisements. All this post aims at is to enjoy some of these great commercials and brands. These are some of the advertisements that I personally  appreciate. Love the concept and execution of these advertisements. I may have no knowledge of creating commercials but just plain appreciation for various concepts, and technical aspects gone into them. Hope I haven’t missed any. Go enjoy.

The Guys who put the ‘DESI’ in Design

Design in India is on a constant treadmill of development since the past years. Initially design in evolved in India as basic art which blended with a little concepts from the west. We had the skill but not the tech. Today it’s a totally different ball game. Though we still look upon the west for opportunities and inspiration, we haven’t copied an entire form of art. In fact we had our own renaissance. Due to the lack of tech support, we extensively developed the hand skill. We may have opened doors to platforms like Illustrator and Photoshop years after evangelist in the west were working wonders with it. Still today, we have an art that we define as our own concepts and ideas. Today we are in power with some of the big design lands like Australia, US and Canada.

Over the past few months I scavenged the internet in search for individuals and organizations that shared the same blood thirsty addiction and love for design. It was hard to come upon many but I did find a few. From individuals to various events and conferences DESIGN in India is no longer a quiet profession. Today everyone from a concept builder, visual artist, graphic designer, brand & identity builder and designers in general are few to come across but great in demand. These are the guys who push doors open and step out of the BOX, so turn your concepts, ideas and startups into a reality all within the Digital space.

Whether you are a amateur or a professional or even a student (Like me) stepping out into the design world is not rocket science. Harnessing the power of Social Media, Online technology and tapping your potential to push your creativity and skill to the next level is what is going to let you leave a foot print.

So in this post what I basically intend to cover is a few interesting concepts and organizations and events I bumped across in my little search for the Guys who put the DESI in Design.

Breeding ground of future artists:

Fundamental Fest (FDM) – Symbiosis Institute Of Design Pune

The annual design festival of Symbiosis Institute of Design (SID), where ideas amalgamate with creative freedom to form a fun filled extravaganza. – @FDMfest

Great opportunities to vent and learn much more about design and art from young folks, talented guys in the business as well as the conferences organised .Right from their event logo to their website, Fundamental has a lot to offer for the budding artist in various forms. I missed it this year but next year will be a sure trip.

RGB Fest – National Institute Of Design (NID)

Students from India’s foremost design and art institutes will come together for a
three day exchange of ideas and experiences. RGB 2011 will be a platform for inter-
college networking through exhibitions and competitive events. In addition to this
we host a series of unique workshops and interactive sessions with professionals
and experts in the fields of design and design education. With original work across
design spheres being shared alongside electrifying performances, RGB 2011 promises
to be a bigger, better and wackier experience!

RGB reminds us of days where hand drawn illustrations were the tools of trade. With its various events in the Event Nagar RGB has a wide scope of entertainment all arranged for you design freaks

FX School – Mumbai

Right from Photography, to animation and even digital painting FXSchools serves it up on a platter. Recently it was ranked as a top institute for animation in India. Follow their facebook feed and twitter stream for live action from within their fort. Have a peep at their student’s work and get inspired. With some of the best faculty and tech, they are an awesome platform to learn from. Its one of the very few courses that offer Digital Painting. Personally I regularly look up at their site and updates for various courses and student’s work. A very friendly faculty that understands your queries and guides your potential in the right path.

Now for some Design events and competitions

DesignYatra 2011 – Goa

A journey that began in 2006 Designyatra was a journey that we undertook in 2006.The conference celebrates design excellence, provides insights into the future of brand and visual communications while simultaneously bringing together the design and corporate community in India.
