I completed a year at Adobe this October (Woohoo!). The last 12 months here have been insanely crazy and I couldn’t think of a better way to share my experience. In the words of “The Photoshop Guru – Russel Brown”
It’s been close to 5 months that I have moved to Bangalore. Today, I attended Meta Refresh 2014 for the first time along with a bunch of designers and developers from Adobe. One of them was a even presenting about SVG. I was pretty excited about the whole 2 day conference and the sessions that were going to be conducted. However it kind of didn’t go that well. Meta Refresh turned out to be a bit disappointing for me. Leaving that aside, the conference had a lot to offer despite the overall disappointing set of presentations. I wanted to do a post that covered the entire 2 day conference, but decided to only throw in the most relevant bits I picked up.
Vision is different from ideas.
I have a vision. I have an idea. I have a vision and an idea. I going to take that vision and that idea and build a product. I’m super awesome. No. Vision is the long term goal. Idea is the path to that goal. Ways to get there change. Some work. Some fail. Some ideas are good and some are bad. Having said that, it’s only natural that we change our path to our goal as often as possible. Sometimes we change our steps, improve the idea, sometimes backtrack or ditch the idea, because we thought of a better way – a better idea. The point still stands – the vision never changes, despite the ideas that change. This is a subtle warning that we often very easily overlook. Define our products on a vision and not an idea. Change how you want to build it. Don’t change what you intend to do with it. Decouple the vision for a product from the idea you have for the product. People on a team need to have different ideas. But most importantly they need to have one vision. Building your product involves validating your vision. Post that validating your idea for it. Validate, prototype, test and iterate on the ideas. But focus on the vision. When both the idea and vision merge what you end up with is a product based on an idea but a compromised vision. Drive the vision on a solution to a real world problem. Drive the idea on user’s feedback. Very often we are building products with a vision that already have others in the same domain. Simple – We need to disrupt. We need to incrementally improve. That’s where we need to change our ideas. There is no harm in building products with a vision, a vision shared by thousands of others. What matter is the way we solve it. The way we fulfil our vision. They way we build it. The idea we build it with. Have a vision. Have several ideas. Many may have the same vision. Don’t bother. A few may have the same idea. That’s where you need to improve. You need to disrupt. Keep the vision, change the idea.
It’s not full responsive. It’s called full responsibility.
You designed a fully responsive site for your product. Awesome.
- Case A: I’m guessing that means it’s fully accessible to your all the users. Well my site site can easily resize within the browser. Well most browsers. Well most modern browsers. Okay maybe guys with IE probably won’t be able to access it.
- Case B: I’m guessing that means it’s fully accessible to your all the users. Well my site site can easily resize within any browser. Definitely all browsers. Yes, I even considered for IE. Okay maybe it will work but I’m sure if it’s still functional.
Clearly full responsive is not full functional. We build for the web. The web is a medium. Browsers allow us to access that medium. And what the web contains is experiences. When we build, we need to design for full responsibility. Responsive is good. Responsive is needed. But functional is more important. To think of it the web grows so fast. The way the people access it changes every day. The medium through which they consume these experience changes every month. And the content experiences that define this web change every second. The web is changing faster than we can imagine. Build with backward compatibility. Don’t just design for backward accessibility. Design for backward functionality. I guess here’s where it makes sense to build your online product as a stack of blocks. Build it in a way that even if a block doesn’t play well with browsers from 3 years ago, that domain of users can still access as well as use it. It’s hard to build with independent blocks and fall backs, but that’s the need. You can’t assume that just because you keep up with the fast moving web, so do your users. The pace is very different. Their access point, and means to access the web change slowly. So designing full responsive is not the answer. Designing for full functionality is the answer.
Design for the workflow not the task.
We often tend to build products with a single model. A model that we assume fits all our users. If it doesn’t we usually state those aren’t our users. We engineer products based on a model that is almost always focussed on a task. Very rarely on a workflow for that task. Online transactions for example. I keyed in my card details and hit submit.
- The task is very simple – Debit the amount for the user’s account.
- The workflow was equally simple – Take the user’s payment details, debit the amount and provide a confirmation.
However we focus and only design only for the task. So while the experience of filling in my card details was easy and provided a sense of security, the other half of the workflow – waiting for the confirmation wasn’t that good. After I hit submit, pop up windows appear with the age old rotating GIF loaders, some including even blank screens, all one after the other keeping the user pinned and clueless till it all goes away and few seconds later a confirmation message appears. Clearly we missed this part of the workflow. The part where the user waits for his confirmation. In the offline world, the user hands over his card, it’s swiped and the transaction is completed. Doesn’t it make sense that we map this same experience to the online product we are building for that same very task? Yes off course. What was missing in the above design was the part where you continue to engage a user even after he has completed his part of the workflow. It’s absolutely necessary to engage the user with visuals that don’t boggle him but atleast let him know that stuff’s happening behind the scene. Having said that, progress bars or animated GIFs are not the best options. Designing for these workflows involve carefully replicating the user’s offline mental model with value proposition and trust symbols. In the real world the when the user swipes his card, does he see how the transaction being processed from the device to the provider? No. So then why online? Think about it. All he cares about is, take the money, give me my service and confirm it’s completion. Hide the unwanted details but map every single action with relevant feedback.
Design Escalators not Elevators.
Probably the best thing I heard all day. Design escalators and not elevators. Both serve the same purpose. Take a person from point A to B without having him to walk that path. Heres the thing, you lose power, the elevator stops. The person is stuck. You lose power, the escalator stops. The person is not stuck. He can still walk up. Design needs to be like this. Design needs to have a fallback functionality. Products need to be able to engage with users even when they have no power or means to and for that they will need to rely on the design – needs to be like an escalator.
A while ago I stumbled across this amazing Photography project by New York based photographer – Brandon. Quoting Brandon – “Humans of New York provides a worldwide audience with daily glimpses into the lives of strangers in New York City.”
In the summer of 2010, Brandon set out on a goal to construct a photographic census of New York City. “I thought it would be really cool to create an exhaustive catalogue of the city’s inhabitants, so I set out to photograph 10,000 New Yorkers and plot their photos on a map. I worked for several months with this goal in mind.”
Along the way, Brandon’s project – HONY, took a completely different turn. Brandon started curating stories and quotes from his anonymous New York City subjects. He started including these small stories and quotes along with the portraits on his blog. “Taken together, these portraits and captions became the subject of a vibrant blog, which over the past two years has gained hundreds of thousands of followers. With over 300,000 followers on Facebook and 120,000 followers on Tumblr.”- Brandon

Brandon curates his portraits and short stories of New York City on his website – humansofnewyork.com & Facebook page – facebook.com/humansofnewyork I have followed several of his portraits for weeks and now months. Leaving aside the Photography aspect of this project, what really amazes me is the kind of stories and quotes he captures. I have seen everything from brave, compassionate, heartwarming to inspirational content in Brandon’s work. His work is pure and unadulterated stories of folks from New York City. He captures some amazing portraits that sometimes tell a visual story even in the absence of textual content. I find his work non subjective and very inspirational. Checking his page daily is now a habit. There is always something heartwarming or encouraging one can find there. Armed with a camera, Brandon manages to really tell stories of the inhabitants of the City.
I really find his project inspirational. His work is a proof of passion & love for what he does. To see his entire set, check his Facebook page or website. If you love stories then this is for you – Stories. Recently Brandon, even went out in aid of the victims of Sandy. He set up an indiegogo page to collect funds for the relief of the victims of Sandy. Brandon in collaboration with Tumblr built a beautiful relief campaign for the victims of Sandy.
HONY & Tumblr Hurricane Sandy Fundraiser

For ten days beginning November 11th, we will be documenting and sharing the stories of those affected by the storm. Hurricane Sandy revealed the power of nature, as well as the power of humanity. We aim to document both. By doing so, we hope to encourage YOU to contribute the relief efforts.

It’s not every day you see someone like Brandon following his passion and curating stories from strangers. His project assumed a different direction along the way, but I love it. And I think a lot of you out there would agree with this fact. Humans of New York is without a doubt among the best photography projects I have seen.

At some time in my life, I’ve been obsessed or borderline-obsessed with saltwater aquariums, the baritone euphonium, reading, piano, filming, financial markets, New York City, and photography. I studied History at the University of Georgia. During my senior year of college, I took out $3,000 in student loans and bet it on Barack Obama to win the presidency. A friend heard about this bet and got me a job trading bonds on the Chicago Board of Trade. I traded for three years. It went really well for a while. But then it went really bad. Whoops. After I lost my trading job, I decided to move to New York City and take portraits of strangers on the street. Mom wasn’t too happy about that decision, but so far it’s gone pretty well. Over the past 2 episodes of the Adobe Creative Suite CS6 review sessions, we looked at what’s new in the overall CS6 package as well as a couple of new features and enhancements in Photoshop CS6. In today’s episode, we will go one step further and checkout some of the not so obvious upgrades and enhancements that Photoshop CS6 has to offer. Today I am going to focus on a couple of tools that most of us use on a daily basis.
Everyone is pretty familiar with the CS5 crop tool. However the new CS6 crop tool is different. In CS6 when you click on the crop tool icon, what you notice is that the crop tool creates anchors around the image and at the corners. Now you can easily use these anchors and drag to select the area you want to crop in your image. What many don’t notice is that this new crop tool automatically centers the crop section as you drag while creating your selection. Another feature is that while you are making your selection, it also gives you the exact dimension of the crop selection. Another neat feature is the crop presets that are available. Using them you can easily crop images while maintaining the original aspect ratio or even choose to crop it to a whole new set of dimensions based on a preset. Apart from that, you can create your own presets too. For those who find the whole new crop tool too complicated, you can easily jump back to the old CS5 crop tool but just changing the settings for it.
I score the crop tool a 5/5 for:
- Auto centering the cropped area.
- Adding presets.
- Incorporating straightening an image in the crop tool
- Additional setting like crop shield and delete pixels options
Dealing with Layers:
I did cover the topic of layers in episode 2, but I wanted to get inside it just a bit more. Managing layers is never an easy task. Once you hit a large number of layers, organizing and renaming them is a real headache. However with the new CS6 layer options and features it’s made much easier. CS6 allows you search your layers or rather filter them based on a particular field. You will notice the new icons on the top of the layer panel that allows you to filter the layers in order to search the layers based on pixel layer, adjustment layer, text layer and shape layer. So incase you are looking out for that particular shape in the layer stack, all you have to do is filter them out based on text layers and your search is made much easier. Similarly you can also locate your pixel and shape layers. Another awesome feature is where it allows you to search the layer by name, mode, attribute or color. So incase you are one of those guys who rename every single layer, you can easily search your layer using this feature. Similarly color coding your layers is helpful as CS6 also allows you to search the layers based on color.
I score the new layer features a 6/5 for:
- Firstly making layer management a piece of cake.
- Precise and helpful filters for layers.
- Preset search and layer name search options.
- Multiple layer operations.
This is again something I spoke of earlier but never got into much detail. Migrating from one version to another is always a matter of concern if you work with a fixed layout and preset library. However CS6 allows you to migrate your Presets from the earlier versions of Photoshop. In order to do so, all you have to do is jump over to Edit > Presets > Migrate Presets. Once you locate the preset you want, simply save it in any folder you wish and then simply add this same preset via that folder. Then all that’s left is to simply hit the import preset button and you are done. Migrating presets is that simple with the new Photoshop CS6.
Now here’s a random thought for Adobe: “Could there be an auto migration feature that automatically imports your presets from the previous version during the set up and installation of CS6?”
Content Aware tools:
Photoshop CS6 has a couple of new content aware tools like the new content aware move and the content aware patch tool. Let us begin with the enhanced content aware patch tool. The patch tool is an old feature but integrating it with content aware is new. So now you can easily make a selection using the patch tool and replace it content aware! Once you have made your selection, all you have to do is simply drag the selection and let go once you feel the area is closely substituted with another patch from the surrounding image.
To understand the difference between the content aware patch tool and the content aware move tool. The content aware patch tool will simply replace the selected area with another desired section of the same image. As for the original pixels in the selection, they get deleted and replaced by the new ones. As for content aware move, what happens is the selection you make can easily be dragged and dropped elsewhere on the image. Photoshop blends the selection against the new background. Whereas the area that the selection is cut out from will automatically develop a new set of pixels that blend in based on the content aware feature.
I score the content aware tools a 5/5 for:
- Making deletion of unwanted elements in an image so easy.
- Allowing the user to add subtract elements in the image without having to bother about blending them in.
Photoshop CS6 has a whole new set of brush features to offer. This is something that not many have noticed. In CS6 you can now easily change the angle of the brush. Always wanted to do that right? Well CS6 allows you to change the angle of the brush while using it. Simply head over to the brush setting and change the brush dynamics. Similarly you can also preview how the brush is actually being held while using it. Apart from that, it also allows you to space out the brush elements so that in just one click you can draw many objects without having spaced too closed and touching each other. The brush features aren’t too simple to understand at first glance, but play around with them for a while and its pretty simple after that.
I score the content aware tools a 6/5.
Paragraphs and Characters:
For those who work with a lot of text and layout in Photoshop itself, this is a pretty neat feature. Imagine you have separate text layers and want to change the text size for each of those layers. In the old version you have to individually change each layer. However in CS6 you can easily change all those layers in just one click. Working with paragraph and style options makes work much more easier. You can also save your styles and use them in future.

The Question !
I have always been asked, how come I design when I’m an engineer ? What exactly are you planning of doing? Well I think I have an answer.
“What do you want to be?” and “What do you enjoy doing most?”
Two frequent questions that knock our doors at unprecedented moments of life. Answering them is not a challenge, but rather a quest. How often do we give these two questions a thought? At a certain level of comparison shouldn’t these two questions have answers that interlink somewhere? Settling down to facts, every person wants to be “The Man on the Job” who he is confident of living up to and most importantly happy to be. This is the very stage in life where a cold war is triggered within our own state of existence. The Heart and the Mind two unwilling competitors who don’t give in without a fight. Our Heart and Mind are said to have a brain of their own. Not literally. Start on Career –The toughest decisions you have to make. Initialize your thought process, and it should unwind something like this.
The Mind: Money, fame, respect, physical ability and mental capacity.
The Heart: Happiness, enjoyment, least stress, maximum confidence.
The Unsynchronized heart and mind !
These are the tags they shuffle our decisions through. Yes though they seem intertwined, they are a dense network that stimulates our final conclusion after analysis over past, future and the current phase. The line drawn here is thick and still not noticed by many. The unsynchronized phase of events that kick-off and are yet to be followed is just the start to this undesired war. Why is it so, the lack of co-ordination between the two most essential units we live with? I am no doctor or scientist, nor do you need one to explain what I am going to say. Channels: Yes both these opponents draw in and out through different channels.
The mind is conditioned by random events and facts every moment through knowledge, voice and imagery that it picks up perpetually. It is a dependent kit vulnerable to sudden change in opinion. It takes a call after analysis to suit the current needs. The Heart on the other hand: Well hard to tame. Well concealed within, the only bugs that it’s shield can’t withstand are emotions. The heart channels emotions related to various events and happening of the past and present. It subjects the decisions to what our body would emotionally prefer. Whereas our mind channelized to our body’s materialistic and most concerned needs. Not all are that lucky to have a friendly heart and mind. They both work at the same moment but in different directions and are trying to win the race which has no only one winner. The Heart decides what we love doing, whereas the Mind decides what we want to be. (In my opinion)
Story Of my Life !
Today, I believe the Mind is the winner. Ask an individual what he wants to be in a professional career. You will hear the most frequent bloom streams like Law, Medicine, and Engineering. Definitely nothing wrong in that. But don’t you think so many people out there want to be the same person? Are all happy to be this or are they just flowing with mainstream conventions. I am astonished by the fact thousands of people out there, share the same dream. Is that what they want to be? Or are they happy to be. The point I am trying to make is the answer to the two questions: Have all these people convinced their Heart and Mind. Or are they living a war deep within their thoughts. Whose dream are they really living? Couldn’t our talent, happiness, ability and desire just patch like a big puzzle to show us our dream. I love my ability to be creative in terms of art, but I want to be a person who is completely equipped with the knowledge to pursue a career in Computers. (I suppose at least 6 out of 10 people are in a similar boat!)
Ok I am in Engineering and they definitely don’t teach drawing or creativity. Thought process ends here for me. The mind wins since it suggested that I get into the Tech field. The heart lost since I yet hadn’t seen a way to bring out my creativity. Not that I wasn’t happy but it wasn’t to my heart’s content. How on earth was I supposed to be happy with this decision? I had to find a way to correlate by reason being here and possible vents for my talent. Seeing how talented I was in designing people bombarded me with statements saying I should have pursued another stream. How do I convince them that I love doing that but I want to be an Engineer. By now you’ll have reached a stage where you think I am completely retarded or confused. Yes, that was a stage, but no longer. Since
This is the part where I think I’m awesome ! – My Story
I was unlucky to have a “Unfriendly heart and mind”. I figured I would have to negotiate a way out. Simple terms, link two different opinions and draw a final conclusion which I take creditability for. Now I am in a technical phase, constantly surrounded by things I like and don’t. I want to be able to pull out my creative strings along. After almost a year of relating with my subjects that I will encounter, a little personal research, guidance and help. The verdict was made. Digital media & design: The intersection of design and technology for me. It took a lot to convince myself what I had chosen was right or wrong? The decision I made is supported by what my heart says and also my mind suggest. Over the past years I have studied every thing from Microprocessors to Operating systems and web engineering & planning. There are certain areas I want to go back to and then there are certain I don’t want to. Apart from that, it’s close to around 4 years since I bagged my first client as a freelance designer. Over the years, I have evolved through several experiences of working with start-ups, NGO, agencies and even clients from hell. Print was like the best thing that happened to me. For a while at least. I was good with communication design on paper, but wasn’t satisfied. I wanted to take it to the next level. That’s where the magic happened.
I moved on to web. The first 2 years with web were scary. I was still learning to adapt and design for it. I refrained from any client projects till I felt I had a strong base in web to be able to deliver for a price. I watched, learnt and experimented. To my luck, the semester in college at that very moment had me involved in database and web technology concepts and programs. It aided my learning process. Soon I joined a group of freelance developers who primarily worked on web applications and products. The idea was simple. They needed a design consultant for print. I needed to learn the tricks when it came to web. Over the period of time, I worked on several projects with them. Designing simple UI elements to website banners and forms, I gradually watched what they did and how they did it. I call this phase visual learning. I never understood how the coded at first. I watched, went home, tried, failed,asked again, watched, tried again, partly successful, repeat. I enjoyed every bit of it. Few months down the line, I pulled off my first website with PHP and Database. Few months later, dabbled in WordPress and launched my own portfolio website. It’s been a long trip. Print got lost somewhere in there. I realized I was happy with where I was heading but yet not fully convinced. I wanted that exact point of intersection of design and technology. I realized it was time to start liking a few things that I didn’t and reworking some of my concepts. I spent months looking for the right channel to couple my 2 areas of interest.
That’s the time I decided I want to get into digital media. For me digital media incorporated both my engineering skills on technology, platforms and code along with design, interaction and creativity. I tried to work and learn more about how design intersects with technology and I realized it’s not rocket science. It’s just there, you have to look at it right. Design is a part of every thing. From the cup that you sip your coffee to the experience you archive while reading this post. I thought I was at a crossroads of my career. Today I stand with this belief that the world needs design heroes. Yes, Design heroes – dudes who know how to engineer the experience, create functional design and overlap them not just to build a product that delivers but to construct a “Brilliant! that is insane” type of product.
Learn from yesterday !
I don’t know if I would ever realize what I truly wanted to do. But today I feel every experiment, every client, every project and every failure taught me something. Something that in the long run helps me correlate my areas of passion and interest. The best example of this would be my experience with User interface design. When I started working on client projects for websites and applications, I always managed to pull off visually appealing designs. Never did I have a client who told me “I don’t like what I see”. My designs were a match to the brief. Here’s where I went wrong. 4 out of 5 clients came back to me after a week and asked me to tone down the design just a little bit. Confusing right ? I mean they liked it and now they want me to cut a few parts out of it ?
Keep Calm and think again !
I want others to understand that choosing something that you feel is right for you according to present scenarios is not right. Well suppressing your emotional desire for it is completely wrong. I suggest everyone should take some time off to answer these two questions and see what their answers turn out to be. Start linking and correlating. Figure out ways to be a person you would love to be and not a person you’d want to be. This is something you decide no one else. You love music and want to be a person equipped with literature? Who said its miles apart? Link them and I am sure something will pop up. Be it any stream or desire it’s up to you to find that bridge that gets it together. It may take time but the joy of settling on a decision that you wanted and happy with is priceless. Break away from conventional society of thought and moral perspectives, explore your options. They are never few doors and doors are never locked.
Finally what I want to conclude is that no matter what soup you are in at any stage of life, no matter how grave the battle gets. Correlate, Negotiate, and finally you call the shot. Life is going to give you lemons when it comes down to decision-making. You got to make the Lemonade! Often it’s your mind or maybe your heart that’s going to decide. Its time you stand up, think and unite with the two to achieve what ‘YOU’ want. The Heart and the Mind are two dangerous gifts we have. You can’t keep both happy without a little compromise. Go ahead Live your Dream. You are the architect and builder. Make it epic and “awesomize” it !
Design for love & work for money.
You still wondering, who am I ?
It’s been more than a month since I started using Photoshop CS6. So far I have nothing to complain about, in fact my experience working with it has been great. Migrating from CS5.5 to CS6 was a little challenge. New workspace, new tools and a whole new set of visual elements to get used to. This episode I aim at covering at couple of new features in Photoshop and Illustrator CS6. In the following episode (3) we will look at some of the more hidden and advanced features these softwares have to offer. To begin this session, we will look at the more basic and primary changes Adobe has incorporated in the new CS6 softwares. What’s new with Photoshop CS6 – Part 1. Firstly what everyone has probably noticed is the new look they gave Photoshop. Apart from the new icon and splash screen design, I am talking about the new tools and new variable backgrounds. The new features start right with the installation of CS6.
- Importing from CS5 to CS6
- The new interface in CS6
- Manage your layers more efficiently
- Background Save + Auto Recovery
- Content Aware
1. Import your presets from CS5 to CS6
Firstly the most important aspect the Adobe incorporated is importing your CS5 workspace and presets to CS6. Photoshop CS6 allows you to import your presets and workspace settings easily without any hassle. It’s so much better than having to go back and import each of those presets and actions. So 5 points to Photoshop CS6 for making migration so simple and effective. If anyone wondering how to get around this, simply go to Edit > Presets > Preset Manager
2. The new interface in CS6: Background UI
The new interface in Photoshop CS6 allows you change the workspace background color. It allows the user to select from 4 options ranging from Dark grey to medium dark, medium light and light grey. Based on your preference, with a single click you can change your workspace to give it a more open and wide or more compact and sophisticated look. My question here – “Adobe what the hell took you guys so long! This is bloody brilliant!” Personally I work with the darkest grey option and simply love it. Especially because it helps me design a little more comfortably. My white canvas now stands out more distinctly than it used to in CS5. To check this new feature simply head over to Edit > Preferences > General > Interface … You can easily customize your workspace settings there. Since you are there, I would suggest drop by at the other setting options too. For example head over to performance and adjust your RAM settings to your preference. Similarly jump to File handling and enable background save option etc. Couple of tweaks and adjustments and you can have Photoshop run like butter on a hot pan. I’m serious. I manage to run CS6 on my 2.5 GB workstation smoothly after I adjusted the RAM settings and scratch disk options. Try it, experiment and you’ll enjoy the experience!
Tools & general UI: As for the general interface and tools I heard Adobe has pulled off a major makeover here! Apparently it includes 1,800 new icons and 250 new cursors. This was done in order to establish a common identity with the same tools in the other softwares. Smart move I say. I never really counted any of those icons but I bet they have. You can easily guess that the interface has undergone some major changes and upgrades. They have pimped so many tool icons, I don’t even know where to start from. But at the end of the day, the new UI and icons together offer a complete new feel and experience while working with Photoshop. So again here I give Adobe a 4/5 for UI changes. Minus 1 because a lot of amateur users claim they find the new look too scary and complicated. Personally I prefer calling them blind. But honestly the new interface kind of throws you off a bit while you start. It takes a while to settle in and adjust. However I believe professionals use this and I’m happy this software is changing in this direction. So sorry amateur users, if you can’t manage the new interface, you have to learn. Just a heads up – Head over and change the background UI color to the last option. It may resemble home for you. Adobe I’m throwing in a few brownie points here just to cover up the minus 1. Because I personally love this new feature.
3. Manage your layers more efficiently
Managing layers was not much of an issue. But hey I don’t mind if they made it simpler! And that’s exactly what Adobe has done! They have improved managing and organizing layers in CS6. That one thing we all dreaded was searching through the unnamed stack of 30 plus layers. Imagine then trying to organize and name them. Well Adobe here is where I give you the standing ovation! Filtering your layers by just one click! Whoa ! What were your engineers smoking? This is simply brilliant. Now if you look at the layers panel you have an option at the top that allows you to filter and view similar layers based on kind, name, effect, mode, attribute, color! You can easily turn on and off the option with a sweet minimalistic switch over there! You can even segregate the layers based on pixels, adjustment, type, shape and type! It makes managing your layers so easy and comfortable. I mean what more could you ask for? Adobe you get a 6/5 here for thinking out of the box. Kudos.
4. Background Save + Auto Recovery
Finally Adobe heard my prayers. I have cried several times, and I’m serious here. Worked for hours together before Photoshop crashed due to some reason and I never saved my work. I have lost my work a couple of times like this earlier! Now why would Photoshop not have an auto save seriously? I once asked my friend why on earth does Photoshop not have an auto save? He replied because real men hit CTRL+S every few seconds. True that. I made it a habit eventually! But with the new CS6 you don’t need to do that. It provides and auto recovery and background save option. Simply head over to Edit > Preferences > File Handling and you will find both these options there. For those lucky folks who have never lost any of their work in this manner and don’t really get the point of auto save and recovery. Here is an example. Imagine you were working in Photoshop on a project and haven’t yet saved it. Now say for instance your annoying niece decides to press a few button while you take that pee break. When you return, your niece has successfully managed to open up 5 or 6 applications and chocked you PC. As in most cases, its hung and you need to restart. But what the hell! I haven’t saved my Ps work file. Chill bro, just hit the restart button like a man. Photoshop background save and auto recovery will work its magic on the next startup. You will find your file saved for you and can resume work. Adobe I give you another 6/5 here. No more tears. Thank you.
5. Content Aware
Whenever I wanted to show off my skills using Photoshop, the first thing I would do is use the content aware fill to magically replace a tree in the background or remove a part of a image and blend the empty space with the surrounding. So for those of you who already know how the content aware fill works, here is content aware move! Dude this new feature is just insane. Imagine with this feature you can easily select a part of the image and place it somewhere else without creating additional layers! It’s really hard to explain this tool improvement. Just watch these videos to understand more on this awesome tool! Adobe you get a 5/5 for this!

What’s new with Illustrator CS6 – Part 1
Now when it comes to illustrator again there are a couple of things that overlap with Photoshop. New interface and new tool icons along with the variable background. Besides those we have a lot of new changes and features in Illustrator CS6 as well.
- Mercury Performance Engine
- Pattern Creation feature
- Image Trace options
- Improvements in type options
1. Mercury Performance Engine
This is not something that you see as soon as you start Illustrator up. But this is a rather more technical enhancement from Adobe. To put it in the simplest terms, with the new Mercury performance engine you can utilize all of your RAM to help open, work and save large files in Illustrator. This new feature on CS6 allows the user to manage complex effects and designs with large files in Illustrator CS6. It works for 64 bit systems and is a brilliant feature that provides stability and capability to handle complex and large files in Illustrator CS6.
2. Pattern Creation feature
This is an interesting new feature in Illustrator. The new pattern creation feature allows you to create a vector pattern and repeat it without any hassle in Illustrator. Creating a tiled pattern and editing it is very easy. Just head over to Object>Pattern>Make. The object now repeats on the art board. So simple. Just imagine the stuff you could do with vector patterns ! You can control the pattern in the pattern options. Also it updates the pattern as you work on the object. Pretty neat and handy I say ! Great job Adobe !
3. Image Trace Options
Bye bye Live trace and hello Image trace. This is a new feature that replaces the old live trace option in CS6. I tried the new image trace and I think it works much better than the live trace. Along with that there a couple of new trace options that will come in handy. Few among the new ones are Shades of Grey and Silhouettes (Which is kind of just a rename but enhanced trace option) Try them out and for sure you will find a difference !
4. Improvements in type options
The new improved tool options let’s you play around a little more. Users can now use the arrow keys to change fonts in context for selected text. Similarly Glyphs for caps, superscripts and much more can be adjusted and modified from the Character panel in Illustrator CS6. Obviously these features become more relevant as you start using CS6. You can adjust your characters and text more easily in CS6. Just hit the Character option and the options should display. There you can adjust the base-line shift, kerning and rotation of the characters. All in one place for simplicity !

This is probably the most “exciting” post I have ever done. Simply because it has so much digital, design and learning packed in it. From 30 August 2012 till 1 September 2012, Kyoorius – ‘Where Creatives Meet’ organised a brilliant 3 day design event called Designyatra . This was the 8 edition and theme for this year was – “The Divide” This year they had an additional day dedicated to understanding the divide in the digital area of design – The Digital Day. The entire 3 days featured some mind-blowing and amazing creatives from Adobe, Google, Microsoft and Nokia. Besides these tech creatives there were many other designers and entrepreneurs too. Since I am a big fan of design and digital media, there was no way I was missing out on this event! So bags packed and I headed to Goa for Digital Day 2012 – The Divide ! The conference was organised by Kyooruis at the Grand Hyatt | Goa. Digital Day was the first of the 3 days of Designyatra. This special one day dedicated to digital, boasted some of the best in the industry –

Before I get into the details of who said what and why, first a loud applause to Kyoorius for the kickass setup and detail put into the entire branding and design of the event. I loved every bit of the passes and stationary provided. Great design and creativity put into everything right from the badges to the notebooks. Kudos. Anyone who was there that day would agree to the fact that they can’t remember every single thing that happened because it was way too awesome and action packed. Listening to each of these speakers talk was pure joy. The day started with an opening note from Mr. Rajesh Kejriwal – Founder Kyoorius Magazine after which the ever so energetic and lively Debbie Millman took over the show. First up – Robert Wong !
1. Robert Wong – Chief Creative Officer | Google
“He made us cry with that dear Sophie video. Can you believe that ! “
Robert without a doubt was probably the funniest guy on stage. He very safely begun by dedicating a fair part of his presentation to why you should keep your wife happy. Soon he shared how he was into accounting and landed up in Google simply by designing some Gmail shortcut stickers for the keyboard which later back fired. Robert being a part of the Google family gave us an inside perspective of how Google is trying to out do themselves everyday. He focused on how it is important to do something that makes life simple and enriches it. He played a series of videos that highlighted his team’s work at Google for various products. He said – spend 99.9% of your time MAKING, to do good things that matter ! He even spoke about how Google sold and marketed a browser – Chrome (Which everyone thought was not possible. I mean seriously, who sells a browser to the user ?) Also showcased a new product of Google – Exquisite Forest and spoke on how the video was designed for Google’s Glass Project. The best part of Robert’s presentation was – every video he showed us had so much emotion to it. They were real stories of real people and how Google was transforming lives. It wasn’t some creative guy making shit up.I personally loved the Dear Sophie Gmail video which is a true story of an engineer working at Google. Apart from that the Chrome Speed test and the Exquisite Forest videos which were interesting, another really touching story was the – It gets better video -” Beginning with one inspiring video, Dan Savage used the web to create the It Gets Better project–a movement that has generated thousands of uplifting videos that give hope to teens.” He also spoke about how they did a hangout with the Dalai Lama and Desmond Tutu. It was Google and the real world connecting. Robert also said – “I don’t like to make ads. I make demos and documentaries.” Robert really rocked the show and it was a great start to the event. I really love the note on which he ended his presentation – “Make the World better, Do EPIC shit people ! “ – That’s Robert for all of you ! (Completely unrelated, the T Shirt I got at the event happens to be designed by Robert! Yippee!)

2. Sander Ejlenberg – Creative Director | Ice Mobile & Muse
” customize + personalize = awesomize your brand interface via mobile and digital.Mobile “
Sander was amazing. He had so much to offer in terms of design and storytelling with digital on the mobile platform. He presented some of his work with Ice Mobile and Muse. We heard a lot about how the mobile interface was the key to the unified experience. I clearly remember this piece of work he showcased for ABM AMRO Mobile Banking – ” Together with ABN AMRO IceMobile developed Mobile Banking by ABN AMRO. With the Mobile Banking application you can check your balance, transactions, view and make transfers via your mobile phone. The service is primarily available as an app for iPhone and iPad, and will very soon be available for Android and Blackberry.” Some really important points he focused on were, how important an interface is while establishing an enriched user experience. He also mentioned about how its important for brands to market and story tell using digital and mobile content in today’s world.
3. Aapo Bovellan – Director Brand Marketing | Nokia and
Bruno Maag – Creative & Managing Director | Dalton Maag
” What do you guys smoke ? ” Bruno to the Bengali folks !
This was another really interesting and yet surprising presentation. By the end of this session by Aapo and Bruno, everyone had new-found respect for Nokia. It begun with Aapo speaking about what went into establishing a unified and personal branding for Nokia. Right from their product design to their packaging. Some key points by Aapo were – Make a product, you love yourself. Focus on doing your own thing. A lot of solid points by Aapo on how Nokia believes they are the first mobile and how they stay unique to it. 3 points I really loved were –
1. Understand who you really are.
2. Make an original product.
3. Have a focused identity.
I really enjoyed the Nokia Pure view short film. At some point I remember, Aapo saying Nokia made the best maps. I really wanted to see the look on Robert’s face at that moment. (CCO at Google) Soon Aapo was joined by this amazing dude – Bruno From Dalton Maag. And then this was a deadly mix. We were just taken on this amazing trip with the new Nokia typeface – Nokia Pure ! Oh man it was amazing to see and understand the effort and design process that went into the new Nokia type face. It was mind-blowing to see how many different languages it supported and will in the near future. Nokia was really living up to the line – Connecting people. I remember Bruno spoke about how they were building it for Gujrati, Tamil, Hebrew, Arabic etc. What I clearly remember was Bruno saying – ” When it came to Bengali, we had a lot of struggle. I mean seriously what do you guys smoke ?” Bruno spoke about how challenging it was to build the new type to support Bengali at first. Similarly what political challenges they faced in China and similar religious barriers they had to overcome in other parts of the world. On a whole the entire presentation was really amazing and filled with some kickass facts about Nokia ! Oh also these Dalton Maags they gave us are just amazing. The display some client projects and also the new Nokia Pure Typeface. At the end Nokia did us proud.
4.Nic Roope – Founder & ECD | Poke (UK)
” Digital has really become big now. But in the process, we have managed to piss everyone off “
Nic was simply so fucking interesting ! And I am not exaggerating that even one bit ! He may come to look as a stern and serious guy, but hey, he is a really great person to talk to. I think he showcased some of the best digital media projects during the entire day. His projects had not only a digital aspect but a balanced feed of digital, design as well as technology put into play. Most of his work with Poke was really innovative, kinda out of the box. He spoke on how digital has become a medium to share and how simple it is to tap its potential if done right. He highlighted how sometimes you just go with an idea and make it big. I really enjoyed the work he showcased. They had a creative as well as a funny edge. Some of the projects were an advertisement for Diesel Eye wear, Phone Fund for Orange and a never-ending web page !

5.Rodney Edwards – Principle Design Manger | Microsoft
” The design idea needs to be bigger than the design team ! “
Finally Rodney gets on stage. I was really looking forward to hearing him speak about Microsoft’s new direction in design and branding. Rodney took us through a series of images that explained Microsoft’s new design philosophy. He explained how Microsoft was moving into a direction to unify all its products with a common visual identity. Three points I really loved about his presentation was
- “Take pride in craftsmanship. Devote time and energy to small things that will be seen more by many”
- “Engineer the experience at every stage”

He did dive into how they were building the new Windows 8 UI and how the were trying to establish and enrich the whole user experience. A part from that, a couple of previews of apps and layouts that they were working on for Windows 8 on tablets and hand-held devices. Since we had the opportunity to ask the speaker questions, I really wanted to get Rodney on the topic of Microsoft’s rebranding that just occurred. I tweeted the question to Debbie Millman and yippie ! At the end of the presentation Debbie put forward the question to Rodney.
Q: Debbie : “Rodney what is the design philosophy that went into rebranding the new Microsoft logo and how has it been received – Jonathan ”
Rodney explained that the step in rebranding the Microsoft logo was a part of unification of the overall brand and products. They aimed at establishing a unified identity with the logo and products. He also said, it was to make it more human.
6.Micheal Gough – Vice President Experience Design | Adobe
” You build a portfolio that will get you hired !”
Micheal Gough was the man of the evening. Without doubt the last but the best presentation by Micheal Gough – VP XD for Adobe. Micheal went down to the core of what drives a company like Adobe in building these cutting edges tools that help deliver in the digital loop. He was very honest in every word. He spoke about the creative cloud and how it would shape up in the near future. Also how it aims at making the Adobe softwares more available to the crowd. He spoke about how Adobe is trying to reshape and build better tools that will help cater to the growing and changing needs. He made a really lovely and inspirational presentation which I thoroughly enjoyed. But the best part was what happened after the presentation. Along with a few others, I had the opportunity to sit down with Micheal Gough and a couple of other from Adobe like Phil and Jay Dutta and have an open conversation with them.
This was the real fun part. I must say Micheal loves telling stories. And I wanted to hear more, even after the session ended. Micheal gave us a brief of how he landed up with Adobe. Starting his career in Architecture and then moving on to design with a sports news channel and other places. He also did a stint with Nike and later joined Macromedia and ultimately Adobe. He shed light on how we must follow what we want to do. Measure our capability and make wise decisions. He explained how he took up the creative director job at Nike and left it. Simply because he felt he couldn’t do it. We shouldn’t go by the job title and designation but follow what we want to do – Micheal’s advice. We even asked him a couple of question. I remember someone asked him what kind of tools were developed by Adobe for managing and visualizing data. Micheal explained that currently Adobe isn’t heading in that direction. He also spoke about, if someone plans to step in that arena he has got to be good in numbers, and design to correctly interpret and present data. Someone else asked him on how Adobe predicts what is going to be the next best tool while developing their products for the digital world where change is a constant factor. He explained, Adobe can’t predict but they keep advancing and build better tools. They innovate while at the same time upgrade their existing platforms. He would make that sad simley face every time someone went near a topic that involved Flash. (Something very close to me – Micheal Gough) He spoke about how Adobe is building some new and wide range of tools based on HTML 5 technology. It seems pretty exciting ! He focused on how the creative suite tries to improve their tools and build better ones. A surprising statement he made was Adobe is working on some open source tools ! My goodness. Just imagine ! To which someone promptly replied – ” Will illustrator be open source ?” Micheal – “Haha, Illustrator and Photoshop never.” He also spoke about how Adobe is trying to integrate illustrator and Photoshop to help cross-platform work process. While he spoke about how they working on some new HTML5 based tools I asked him why is Adobe still selling Dreaweaver when they have successfully launched Muse, which essentially does the same thing but quicker. He explained saying just because we made a new tool, we won’t chuck the old one out. Plus a lot of money is made on the sales of Dream weaver. He said, the Dreaweaver team doesn’t sit silent. They will not wait for another software to out beat them, but in fact will find ways to out beat themselves before someone else. Which makes completely sense. He strongly supported the notion of experimenting and learning from mistakes. He said, there was a time when Adobe tried to integrate all the creative suite products into a single software and failed miserably. He said, however we learnt from it and continued developing. Mistakes help you decide better. Build better. The point I really like about the Creative cloud was what that Micheal explained – When we need to fix a bug or tools in a version of a software, it takes 18 months to release a corrected or fixed one. However with the creative cloud we can provide the new fix as soon as it is ready. Plus the cloud in the future will help several creative to collaborate and work on projects. Meeting and listening to Micheal was a delight and a memory for me. Before we departed I also had a quick word with Jay Dutta – XD at Adobe. It great talking to him about what kind of designers Adobe hires and how they work. As I describe this evening – An Adobe overdose ! I personally am a big fan of Adobe and work with so many of their softwares. Recently I started a series of review sessions on the new Adobe Creative Suite CS6 on my blog as a part of the Adobe User Review Program. Having an opportunity to sit with these folks from Adobe has given me a lot to think about.
At the end of the day, I would say this was an awesome event. I learnt so much. I left Goa with a head filled with so much inspiration after meeting hearing these amazing folks. I don’t think I slept that night. What I loved was that every speaker spoke on conquering the divide via unification rather than going into detail about the divide itself. Having a chance to meet folks like Debbie Millman, Micheal Gough and Sander Ejlenberg is bucket list stuff for me ! Debbie deserves a huge round of applause for hosting the event so well and connecting the audience with the speakers. It was great meeting a lot of fellow designers and creatives. One thing is for sure, next time I am staying for all the 3 or more days Designyatra 2013 will have to offer. Great job by all the speakers and the Kyoorius team.

Hello and welcome to the first episode of the Adobe Creative Suite 6 review sessions. On April 23rd 2012, Adobe made the big announcement of the upcoming CS6 upgrade. It’s been close to 4 months since then. While designers and tonnes of other user waited impatiently to get their hands on the new upgrade, many wondered what was the new upgrade and was it worth the buck ? I have migrated from CS5.5 to CS6 and I have one word for you – REMARKABLE. Adobe has really packed a punch in CS6. With some major upgrades and new tools, Adobe has rolled out a fleet of digital tools that push the creative boundary even further within the digital and print loop.So the big question is should I move to CS6 ? Is the upgrade worth the price ? This is what the review session is aimed at. Episode by episode we will dive in deeper into a few selected softwares from the Adobe Creative Suite Master collection 6. We will run through everything good and bad about the CS6 softwares. Most importantly, anyone can follow these reviews. It’s not from a testing or technical point of view, rather from a user point of view. So buckle up and dig in.

1. What CS6 has to offer compared to CS5
As compared to CS5, Adobe CS6 Creative Suite Master Collection consist of 11 updated softwares and 2 new softwares. Most of the previous softwares have undergone some major changes, while a couple have had minor tweaks. We will also look into 2 new softwares that Adobe has bundled into the Creative Suite Master Collection CS6.

2. What are the technical requirements for CS6
A major question on everyone’s mind. Will the new upgrade survive on my existing system conifg and specs ? Well surprisingly the new CS6 does demand for a more advanced and strong configuration, but works relatively fine with the old chaps too. What’s my opinion on the system requirement for CS6. Don’t worry too much. If you are working on Windows, your major concern should be your RAM, Disk Space and Processor. Okay you can worry a little bit.
- Processor : 64 Bit Required but 32 Bit also works. Pentium4 or AMD Athlon 64 processor with 64-bit support and Intel Core 2 Duo or AMD Phenom II processor required for Adobe Premiere Pro, After Effects, and Encore; Core i7 processor required for Adobe SpeedGrade CS6. In simple words, it works best with a 64 bit processor. 32 bit guys, don’t feel bad.
- RAM: CS6 requires 8GB RAM to truly enjoy its full potential. However, you don’t need to break your piggy bank to change that RAM. 32 bit guys, it works fair enough with a 2 GB RAM. However Adobe suggest a 4 GB RAM for 32 bit. For the hip 64 bit guys, 4 GB RAM is ok, but a 8GB RAM is awesome.
- Disk Space: So how much disk space do you need ? To quote adobe – “14.5GB of available hard-disk space for installation; additional free space required during installation (cannot install on removable flash storage devices). Additional disk space required for disk cache, preview files, and other working files (10GB recommended).” Yes the installation does take a lot of time, but its worth the wait.
I am currently running the Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection CS6 on my laptop which has an i3 Processor and 4 GB worth of RAM along with 500 GB disk Space. Works perfect and smoothly.
3. Cost and new softwares in CS6
So how does the new CS6 Master Collection cost ? The all new CS6 comes in at a whooping Rs. 1,76,436 for a complete fresh set. Where as upgrading will cost you Rs.35,665 So go ahead try out the new CS6 softwares for a free 30 day trial or purchase it at – Adobe Store For student discounts look at – Purchase . Also note worthy is that the Adobe Creative Suite 6 Master collection integrates with creative cloud services and the digital publishing suite. Moving on lets look at what CS6 had to offer in terms of completely new.
- SpeedGrade CS6 : I had no clue what SpeedGrade was until I read this and played around with it for a while. To put it in simple terms, what Speed Grade basically does is – Provides powerful color grading capabilities in order to render high quality output for any device. It’s a little hard to really explain how complex and sophisticated it really is. To get a better understanding download the trial and checkout this feature guide – View Honestly this is something for only the big boys as of now. It’s pretty complex to get around with. But it has some really cutting edge features and enhancements that take it to a whole new level. It however has a tight requirement as compared to the other softwares :
- Intel Core i7 processor with 64-bit support
- Microsoft Windows 7 with Service Pack 1 (64 bit)
- 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
- 1GB of available hard-disk space for installation
Prelude CS6: Another software I had no clue about. To be honest I really haven’t had the time to dig into Prelude as of yet, however the basic use of it is to streamline your production task. For those impatient to find out more, jump over to the feature page. Maybe in a couple of future episodes I may just do a small review on it, after using it myself. Its basic requirements are :
- Intel Core2 Duo or AMD Phenom II processor
- Microsoft Window XP Professional with Service Pack 3 or Windows 7 with Service Pack 1
- 4GB of RAM (8GB recommended)
4. Visual aspects of CS6
To begin with Adobe has given most of the softwares a major change in appearance not only in terms of new UI elements and buttons, but also a new set of interface backgrounds, splash screen and icon sets. Hell of a lot of visual changes !
To begin with Adobe has whipped a brand new set of icons for the CS6 softwares. I you look closely each software icon color is derived from the color wheel and slotted into specific locations. Adobe clearly wanted to build a set of icons that stood out on a desktop with any kind of background or wall paper. Personally I love the new icon colors. They make the desktop look more vibrant.

Not many pay attention or bother about the splash screen. But I do. I really love how Adobe puts in so much effort in designing their crazy splash screens. For those who yet have no idea what I’m talking about. I am referring to the small box that appears when you open an Adobe software. Yes, that is called a Splash screen. Now Adobe has gone to great lengths with the design of the CS6 splash screens. I do like them but I think they over did it. Personally I loved the CS3 Box and CS5 Geometric splash screens. The new CS6 splash screens are a little to abstract for me. Here is a small preview of what the CS6 splash screens look like :
Adobe puts in a lot of effort into branding their products. To understand the full nature of their branding process, check out this interesting article on the Adobe Blog. On similar lines, Adobe has put in a lot of design and new changes in the looks of individual softwares. Right from mouse pointers to tools in the workspace, Adobe has gone a great length to give the CS6 collection a new look. As we review the individual softwares, we will have a quick glance at what these softwares have to offer in terms of visual and interface changes.
So that’ about it with Episode 1. We have had a quick over view of what the new CS6 has to offer and how far has Adobe gone to brand the new softwares. We have also had a quick overview of tech specs and the 2 new additions to the Master Collection. Since this is the first episode I have kept it simple and brief. Daily, we come across some really interesting projects. But it’s not daily that we stumble across something unique and innovative. I happened to checkout 3 of these really unique and interesting Design projects. Not only were they related to design, but most importantly they were powered by so many designers.
Today to run a successful project online, you not only require sufficient resources and time, but most importantly what you need is – ‘ AN IDEA’ You have to set foot where no other has within the digital frontier. And that’s what these guys have done. They worked with simple ideas and built something amazing out of it. What’s more amazing is that these projects are fueled by creativity and design not from a single source but from multiple creatives. It showcases a vast plethora of skill, technique and styles. Thus not only a visual treat but a great place to discover new talent and new designers and inspiration.

We have invited 54 top digital creative ninjas and asked them to pick up one card each and make a design of it in their own style and technique. The one and the only requirement to the authors was so that the theme of their artwork should fit to the card they’ve chosen best and as a result we’ve got a deck of individually illustrated playing cards. Needless to say, that the project is now going the right way and reaching the goal rapidly. The decks will be released in a strictly limited edition by the end of April.”

The series of post that start this August, are unbiased and personal reviews on Adobe‘s latest version of the Creative Suite 6 (CS6). As a part of the Adobe CS6 User Review Program I have the opportunity to fiddle and experiment with some of the latest softwares in the CS6 Master collection. This review session is broken up into 10 episode (posts) starting this August, with one review post per month.
These post will primarily be focused on Adobe’s print related softwares –
- Photoshop CS6
- Illustrator CS6
- InDesign CS6
Apart from these I will also do a couple of sneak peeks and reviews on selected video, audio and web softwares that are a part of the Creative Suite Master collection. Everything from Premier Pro CS6 to Dreamweaver CS6. Since this is a personal review, my reviews are going to be limited to the softwares that I work with. Hence these post will tend to primarily focus on print with a dash of web and audio/video. Also a lot of changes and interactive sessions will be added along the way. After a couple of post I will also provide an opportunity for the readers to share their opinion and point of view to help build a little more interactivity and strengthen the discussion.
The most important part of the review is that it will be completely unbiased. We will hear everything from – Good, bad, waste and “I have no clue why would they put something like that ?” Be sure to tune in and be a part of the discussion.

Recently the global design community has witnessed a new movement. A movement called AntiSpec. Slow to catch on with many part of the design community, AntiSpec is a movement that is “supposedly” focused on saving designers from – Spec(ulative) work, which is a cancer within the design industry. Recently when I stumbled upon this movement I was amazed by the initiative and a little confused after reading about it. But what exactly is this whole initiative ? Are Designers dying of Cancer? Are Designers not finding jobs? No. Lets begin.
Well what is AntiSpec ?
AntiSpec is an initiative by Mark Collins from UK. He is the founder and constant source of updates for the AntiSpec movement. To really understand the nature of this initiative, we need to dive in slowly into this topic. As I mentioned earlier, it focuses on how Speculative work is a cancer in the Design industry. Well whats Spec work? Spec work – Crowd Sourcing – Spec competitions, they all involve a single designer or agency working and designing for free in the hope of winning a project or reward.
In short and simple words, today a lot of online platforms provide opportunities for clients seeking design aid to simply tap potential designers and designs in the most easiest manner. All they have to do is pick a suitable site that host design contest, pay them a fee, host a competition to design the creatives they need. That’s the easy part. Now here’s the deal. These sites attract thousands of budding and well experienced designers and artist. They participate by designing an entry and submit it to the site. In this fashion the client receives abundant entries and not forgetting tonnes of concepts and ideas. Well like any race, we have to have a winner. Eventually the client picks a favorite design and the design is awarded with a cash prize etc.
Understanding AntiSpec ?
Lets put this in numbers. 1 client, 1 competition, 2,00,000 designers active on the host site, 1600 designers participate in the client competition, 1 winner. The other side of the coin – 1599 designers lose. Client has received not only a winning design but also those 1599 losing concepts and designs. Expected right ? Well here’s where the AntiSpec comes into play. AntiSpec stands up for all those designers who lose. It has a general message. DO NOT use these sites. Your efforts need not go unpaid. Regardless of the fact whether you a starter or professional, you shouldn’t work for free in this manner.
You’re better off contacting a charity and designing their website for free to add to your folio rather than pissing into the wind at a crowdsourced website. Become an intern. Contact your local design agencies. Freelancers and design agencies can explain to potential clients that they have a policy not to work for free. It is proven that clients can respond positively to the self-assurance that comes from an agency that isn’t willing to sell their soul. – AntiSpec

Commonly known as QR Codes, quick response code is the trademark for a type of matrix barcode or two-dimensional code first designed for the automotive industry. Well we had different plans. Today these little black and white guys are seen everywhere. Not only have they found purpose in different fields of application, but have also settled in comfortably in various form of print. From newspapers and brand identity to apparel and even cupcakes! But the question is,” How does one simply unlock the true potential of a QR code?”
To be able to harness true functionality of this medium, one simply needs to follow a set of rules and principles that form a basis to “effectively using QR Codes.” Most importantly, what one must understand is, regardless of the platform or media it is used on, QR codes have a sole and core purpose of linking from print to web. These tiny little fellas have gone from improving web accessibility from print, to even powering creative and defining mobile marketing campaigns.
How does it work?
To begin with, you need to know what a QR Code is and how it really works. Putting this is simple terms, a QR code has a link or URL within it, which can be read using an appropriate cellphone application commonly known as QR code readers. Using a QR code generator which are easily available online today, a URL is simply converted into a QR code and then downloaded in the form of an image. This image (QR Code )can then be used by printing it and scanning it with a reader from a cellphone. That’s how simple it is to create your QR code.
What exactly is it used for?
Pretty clear, a QR code is a link from the print to the web world. Gone are those days where one has to look and type a long and tricky link into his browser while reading it from a paper. With QR codes all you have to do is simply scan the link and instantly you are directed to the website via your phone browser.
Today QR codes are used for several products. With a common goal or reducing the effort to go to a website, QR codes have found a comfortable spot in the print, magazine, newspaper, business cards brochures and posters. Many have gone big and even used them as vital elements in planning campaigns driven by print media and social media. People have put QR codes on their resumes to even their jackets and other apparel. So if you are going to use QR codes, you need to keep these few tricks in mind. These can be used to design an effective QR code not only for personal use, but also for your next big mobile campaign!
The 5 quick rules of using QR codes
I have used QR codes in a lot of print projects, and having received a lot of feedback and insight about its effectiveness, its safe to say – ” I goofed up 3 out of 5 times.” Hence I now give you the 5 golden rules in using QR codes. Hopefully you won’t make the same mistakes.
- Right media
- Target audience
- Ease of access
Calculating your reach
- Right media – Firstly remember you are linking print to web. So please I beg of you, DO NOT use QR codes as display pictures for your brand or personal Facebook page or other social media platforms. Strictly print media. Keep in mind, your QR code needs to be printed to a certain resolution. If it is printed too tiny it may not work with the cell scanners and that could cost you a lot. Best way to play safe is print and test several times before you get your final product ready! Check your QR code with a couple of different and common scanners and reader. Preferably try scanners from an android device, blackberry, Symbian device and iPhone. Just to be a 100% sure. Also while printing them, be sure your printing process isn’t going to destroy the functionality. For example while printing your business card, using spot UV on the code may make it look really good, but are you sure it won’t cause a problem while trying to scan it ? Again my point – Trial and error.
- Target & audience – Decide the purpose of the QR code, the audience you are targeting and please don’t start putting it on everything. Reason being is even though a major part of the population over the world uses a smart phone capable of scanning QR codes, only a small portion of them actually know what it is and how to read it. Majority of its users actually discovered it by scanning these codes out of curiosity. So place you subject, target audience and then decide. If you are targeting the younger generation it would be a good idea to use a QR code, as they are more likely to know what it is. Similarly the most accessible media or visible for that matter could serve as an excellent host for the code. Make sure you don’t base your entire ROI on the QR code if you are not sure of your audience. Very often QR codes are ignored, simply because people don’t know what they are.
- Location – On similar lines location plays a crucial role. It doesn’t make sense putting a QR code on a billboard on a highway or as a display picture. Reason being, how on earth is the person in the vehicle suppose to scan a QR code up there at that speed? Similarly why would someone scan a QR code from the computer screen to view it on the cell? Wouldn’t it make sense to use a hyperlink in this case ? A better place to use a QR code would be a waiting area or lounge where bored passengers or travelers could scan these codes to discover some interesting puzzles or even read the online newspaper. It’s all about target and audience. In this case it was all about engaging and keeping the passengers busy and occupied. Similarly putting QR codes that link to a couple of games or puzzles on the boring looking boarding pass at airports could be a good idea. Many places even have a poster with a map to help tourist find their way around. They simply scan the QR code from the map poster and their immediately the map opens on their cell indicating their current position. Innovative!
- Ease of access – Similar to what I just mentioned about locations, you must not use QR codes in places that are hard to find or difficult to scan. Many have even had QR codes printed on their jackets and T-shirts. But ask yourself – How easy will it be to read a QR code of a strangers clothes or for that matter how awkward would it be for the person wearing such a T-shirt. Basic principle, stop putting these codes on everything. Think how accessible is it ? Secondly not a supported idea, but yet need. Add the link in words somewhere around the QR code. This point completely destroys the purpose of the QR code being there but, the reason is not everyone knows how to read a QR code yet. Many avoid this for a good reason, but sometimes you may just have to use it. At the end of the day ease of access is also a priority. So depending on the kind of audience you target, a QR code may or may not be the best option.
- Calculating your reach – How many people actually scanned your QR code ? Wouldn’t it be nice to know that. Well there is one slight problem. It’s not easy. One would argue and say probably by accessing a websites backend one can easily get a count of mobile views for the site. Agreed. But how would you know which of those views are directed via the QR code and which were directed by manually entering them in a phone’s browser. There is a simple solution to that. While creating your QR code, say for instance for http://www.examplesite.com I use a link shortening application like bit.ly create an account and now create a customized link for it – http://bit.ly/2lkCBm Why all this struggle. Well if we use the shortened link in place of the actual link, what happens is, we can track the actual traffic and click rate of this link from the bit.ly dashboard. Hence calculate the effectiveness of the QR code. The only major drawback of this is, most of these scanners or readers display the link before it re-directs the cell browser. In such a case the user is provided with a horrible link like this http://bit.ly/2lkCBm rather than http://www.examplesite.com So whats to be done? Well, its left up to you. My suggestion is depending on the use, choose your options. If it were a QR code for business card that’s directs to your personal site, I would say sacrifice the statistics. I would rather have someone look at jonathanpimento.com than http://bit.ly/2lkCBm It would leave a memory at least. On the other hand say for instance you have a campaign and you want visitors to view the details on the campaign website – http://www.campaign.com/archives/2012/vote-for-me In this case it would be a better option to use a shortened version of the link. Any way, the user would not be interested in memorizing such a long link.
Now lets look at a couple of successful and creative QR code powered campaigns and products:
1. Posters at Denver International airport
Posters at Denver International airport makes use of QR codes that on scanning leads to crosswords, Sudoku puzzles and books for all the travelers out there.
2. LEGO Poster
LEGO created a smart poster using a concept that really clicked.Who doesn’t love Lego?! Mytoys.de launched an intuitive outdoor QR campaign whereby they constructed large QR codes out of Lego, and placed them inside advertising displays. The codes were placed in areas that received high levels of traffic from passing families, and inquisitive consumers who scanned the codes were directed towards the company’s website and their products.
3. TESCO Shopping
Tesco put up a number of posters on the Seoul subway scanning the code below the item adds it to your online shopping basket. Easy and convenient. Taking shopping to the next level.
Scanning the code on this menu from a Radisson Edwardian Hotel will take you through to a video of the dish being prepared. Interesting way of engaging your dinner.
5. Resume /CV
A fantastic way to stand out from the crowd, scanning the code takes the user to a video of him giving his resume in his own voice. Innovative but may not be such a versatile idea.
6. Cleveland Museum of Art
Some savvy museums and art galleries have been quick to realize the potential in QR codes for enhancing user experiences. Art galleries such as The Cleveland Museum of Art place QR codes next to exhibits to direct visitors to online or audio tours, or to provide more in-depth information.
Stores like Starbucks are using QR codes to streamline the way they interact with customers. Rather than waiting in a long line to pay, customers can now integrate their pre-loaded card and their phone app to pay more quickly, as well as learn more about the products and stores.
8. Trains in Germany
QR codes can take customers to real-time updates anywhere where there is a constant flow of information, for instance, train stations, bus stops, department store sales, live events, restaurant specials or airline booking. Frankfurt, Germany recently introduced smart posters in train carriages, which provided commuters with travel information, transport connections, special events and points of interest, as well as special offers for travel card holders.
9. Santa Tag
Retailer JCPenney allowed customers to add a personal touch to their gifts. When you purchased a gift from any JCPenney store, you received a “Santa Tag” with an accompanying QR code. By scanning the code, the giver could record a personalized voice message for the recipient. The the giver stuck the code on the package like a gift card.
10. Betfair Football QR Code skydiving bet
In this innovative campaign from Betfair, they combined a giant and inventive QR code, with a viral video campaign. They used 2,000 footballs, 8 glamorous assistants, and 5 hours to make a huge QR code. To prove it worked they also had someone skydive from a plane overhead and scan it on their phone.
12. QR Code art in NY
If this isn’t the most spectacular use of a QR code(s) then I want to see one better! This appeared in New York and is a fantastic combination of art and guerrilla marketing, quite aptly celebrating an artistic pioneer.

Does design play a role in charity?
Why would you need to consider design if you plan to bring a change, make an impact. reach out? The idea is simple. The people (target) whom you plan to help, need you (initiator). But the people(source) whom you are looking at for help, don’t really know about you or your plan. Now that’s where, along with long-term planning and organisational structuring you need design. Yes, you may have the best concept or the plan that can change the world. But if it doesn’t connect with the people, you are going no where. This something universal that applies to any idea. Now that’s where you want design. Design is going to connect the target with the source. And to make it happen is the initiator’s job. You need to visually connect your audience to its target. If you portray the correct message via the most appropriate visuals, I am sure you can establish a connection. Helping a nonprofit is a heart warming feeling that designers would be glad to fulfill! Target the source with simple colors, fonts, graphical elements, and navigation which will increase usability. remember keep your message short, hit the mark and keep it simple. You don’t want them to get lost.
Where does Design come in ?
Right from the organisations or non profits logo, to its cause, to its website, everything needs a touch of design. It’s the visuals that often convey and convince. How many times have you donated via an online website? Probably never or maybe a couple of times. The idea is to convey the message, show them the real cause, tell them what they can do and keep them in the loop. Not an easy task, but yet it needs to be done.
I am currently interning with a non-profit youth organisation called Rock For A Cause As their creative and production head I am responsible for all the print and web creatives. Since the past few months I have been busy working with a few designers and coders to revamp their current website. While at it, I discovered these beautiful non-profit websites that really hit the mark. These are brilliant examples of how to do, and what to do with a website.
The story of the WWII Poster
You have probably stumbled across this poster several times, but never really understood the message it carries. This is no ordinary poster. The story of this plain and simple poster dates all the way back to the second World War. I happened to come across a recent post via twitter, where I watched a short film that told the story of this ‘Keep Calm and Carry On’ poster. It originates at the beginning of WWII and rediscovered in a bookshop in England in 2000, becoming one of the iconic images of the 21st century.
History of this poster – WWII (1939)
During WWII the British government created a series of posters that were to be used in times of war, that would provide the people with reassurance. These poster were to be uniform in appearance and also carried a uniform typeface and an image of the crown of King George the sixth, which would make it hard for the enemy to copy. These poster were designed only in two colors and out of all the design, 3 were finalized & went in to print. These poster aimed at creating a sense of peace and confidence among the people during the time of war. There were 3 simple designs, that carried 3 simple messages. Out of which 2 were printed and distributed by the government. However the remaining one poster never made it out officially, until 2000 !
These were the 3 printed designs:
Out of the 3 designs, the second and the third were printed and distributed in the cities. However the first poster bearing the words “Keep calm…” was never distributed and intended to be used only in times of invasion . In the end this poster was never officially issued.
Almost 50 years layer, this poster was rediscovered in a second hand bookshop in England. I could go on and describe its amazing rediscovery, but I think by Temujin Doran and Nation (Concept and production) have done a beautiful job with this video.
Today only a handful of the original posters survive and most are held by the British National Archives. Only two posters are in private hands, one is held by WarTimePosters.co.uk and one by Barter Books in Alnwick, Northumberland (responsible for starting the recent popularity of the poster). This beautiful short film tells you the story of how it was rediscovered in a second hand book store in England. Even the bookstore has an amazing story – A railway station converted into a book store. It was only after the poster went up in the bookstore that people discovered it. Over the years people have replicated and sold this poster. Many seem to connect with the message it carries. While some just appreciate its design. Whatever maybe the reason, its hard for me to understand, why a phrase from the past decade would have so much appeal now. Is it the design ? Is it the message? Or perhaps its the words and simplicity it carries. Its something that many of us need in today’s busy life. Keep Calm and Carry on. Very few have been able to speak through their design. This definitely one of the most connecting and engaging poster I have seen. Its almost like a voice out of history, for me. It offers a very simple and heart filled message for all, no matter whether its work, study, relationships, a struggle.
The message is simple – ” Keep Calm and Carry On.”

James White is a visual artist and designer living in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. With 12 years of experience, James has worked on an array of personal art projects and with clients including Toyota, Nike, Google, VH1, Armada Skis, Wired Magazine, Universal Music etc. and has been featured in many international design magazines. He is the 1-man crew behind Signalnoise Studio. James has an amazing style which includes using a vibrant set of colors for most of his work. I love the fact that he does so many movie posters. He is a great source of inspiration and also does podcast and broadcast on signalnoise. His unique style of incorporating so many vivid colors is just mind blowing and practically reflected in every piece of his work.

Apart from these sneak peaks, here are a few Hidden gems in Photoshop. Go check them out. Hopefully this post shed enough light on all the new features Adobe plans to pack in the upcoming release of Photoshop Cs6 in 2012. However to my disappointment, I have yet not seen any AUTO SAVE feature! (Long awaited ) So is the upgrade worth the cost, I would say its too early to say. But hell yeah Cs6 has definitely a punch packed in.

Someone I have closely followed since a very long time, Kat Von D ! Kat has always been a great source of inspiration for me. As a person who broke free to combine her love for music, art and tattooing, Kat has turned into a prominent figure in the tattoo business. Kat has some crazy tattoos and some serious art work. The very first line in her ‘High way to hell – High Voltage tattoo book ‘ speaks for itself – “I am a canvas of my experiences”
Born in Mexico and later moved to California Kat’s life story is a complete inspiration for those who live to do what they love most. She has an immense love and passion for music right from Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven to Slayer, AC/DC and Cradle of filth !
Katherine soon developed a strong passion for art in elementary school. It wasn’t long before she was busy sketching Marilyn Monroe. Soon she discovered punk rock, then got her first tattoo and then dropped out of school. In continuation she found love and then left home and headed to Georgia for her love. Unfortunately since she missed her family, she finally went back home to California . She continued tattooing her friends and soon landed up working at Sin City in a tattoo shop. A year later she moved to her dream city – LA ! There after working with several tattoo shops finally Kat built – Hig Voltage Tattoo!
” LA INK was a positive new beginning. The next thing I knew, all the contracts were signed, and it was time to build my own little empire. The construction of High Voltage Tattoo had begun, and I was ready to start a new family. Kat has come a long way from setting up her dream – High Voltage to Wonderland (Her love for art!) She has always sort a way to combine art music and tattooing! Everything right from the tattoo machines to the shop all reflects her style and passion for music and art. I am a huge fan of not only her work but also her story. Even a post wouldn’t tell it best.
Her mission was – “Wonderland Gallery is a brand new venture by famed tattoo artist Kat Von D. Founded in 2010, Wonderland seeks to bring the art of outsiders, romantics and rebels to its West Hollywood locale. By mixing generations, time periods, fashion, and the rock world, we endeavor to create a new experience for the viewer. It is art you’ve never seen before that nevertheless has a familiar feeling to it.”
She also started something very interesting called #asketchaday – where she posted a photograph of her sketch everyday on twitter. Unfortunately she misplaced her sketch book mid way of the project. However these are some of sketches I liked the most.

Tattooing started as an experiment, but then it absorbed me completely. When il tattoo, il put on my music, and fuckin’ listen ———- il listen to my music, and il tattoo. and il get lost in my tattoo.
My skin is a magic mirror that reflects where il have been and now il staring forward into the future——- and its big, bad and beautiful.

As this year of 2011 draws to an end, I figured why not do a post on some of the most creative audio/visual content that hooked us through commercials. The advertisement industry has seen various creative strategies to develop Television commercials this year. From advanced VFX to musicals to even awesome Cinematography. I am not here judging any successful or failed advertisements. All this post aims at is to enjoy some of these great commercials and brands. These are some of the advertisements that I personally appreciate. Love the concept and execution of these advertisements. I may have no knowledge of creating commercials but just plain appreciation for various concepts, and technical aspects gone into them. Hope I haven’t missed any. Go enjoy.

A brand and an identity are two sides of the same coin. Both play a crucial role in development and establishment of a business presence. However evolution of both design follow different paths. How does brand design differ from identity design? Well its like an ice cream. The ice cream flavor is your identity, where as the cone or cup is your brand. To make it simple,
Identity design is creation of visuals and content that represents a company or concept. In the most simplest form – a logo. It can be extended to slogans, taglines or as simple as a purpose or idea. Identity design involves developing content that conveys and portrays the company. It can be viewed at various stages.
- Birth of a company/business
- Campaigns, Product & Merchandise development
It is during this phase that a character in terms of visual content and media is developed. Basic identity requirement is a logo or simply the company name that stands out. Including a tagline will help deliver the message to the masses in a glance. This phase requires crucial thought process and a good team of designers to take a though and put it into a digital loop.

Products & Merchandise:
Sometimes a company may need to develop not only a web content but also merchandise and promotional matter. This are of identity design may range from packaging designs to hoardings to even uniforms! Each company develops products that portray the company’s identity which most importantly needs to be unique. The design of such products should be simple and eye catching so that over a period of time, audience can recognize a company not by its logo but instead by its product design, advertisement or packaging design.
Brands are more like a concept. A brand image is actually how people see think and feel about your company. Brand image is built from direct involvement, transactions, customer stories, testimonials , people’s experience,feedback, memories and interaction. At the end of the day a brand is created not only by the stakeholders but by the audience and consumers at large. A brand is an identity that gradually develops. It takes various strategies and campaigns to take a brand from mere web presence to develop it into a web experience that encourages user interaction. Once a company is a well established brand users not only have visuals of its identity but remember it a memory of a past experience. Brands are built through good and bad, successful and failed campaigns. The main concept in Brand design is developing an identity that is enriched with user interaction and feedback. It should ask less from a user and offer more. It should leave them coming back for more. Brand design often requires various tools and support systems for its growth:
- Promotions backed by a digital media agency
- Campaigns designed by creative agencies
- Social media for online presence
- Constant support presence online & offline
- Virals and creative advertisement strategies
Apart from all this a brand truly succeeds if they live up to their promise. If you promise to deliver, you better the the mark. No user is obligated to a brand. In today’s competitive environment, “better” is nothing. “Different” is whats in style. No one wants a better brand for the same product. Your target audience need to feel the need to come back.For example a user may have different experiences on different shopping sites. Personally I find it more easier to shop on Flipkart than Ebay or Amazon. Reason being, flipkart has a minimalistic user interface and clear navigation with minimum unwanted content on pages. Also the various discounts and modes of payment like COD attract a user over and over again.
A brand will constantly develop. Its not a fixed period of development phase. It evolves with every customer, client, sale and failure. Every brand should constantly engage with its audience to understand its changing needs and trends.Once a brand drops its audience, making the figure rise will involve a lot of client trust building process.The brand design process is subjected to constant changes. There is no fixed format or chalked out plan.

Whats this all about ?
Visual learning may I call it. Something I strongly believe in ever since I stepped into the arena of graphics and design. With no formal training in using Photoshop and other raster tools, I still managed to pull off posters like these. Simply because its not rocket science, but understanding your inspiration. At the end of this post I don’t promise you, that you’ll be an awesome artist, but I do promise that your channel of inspiration will definitely be routed better. Sometime back I bumped across the final destination 5 poster in the newspaper. Really amazed by the idea behind the design, I wanted to try and re create it. So there was my first step into the making of this post. You will further see that was successful to some extent in re making it from scratch and adding a little of my own style to it. It only motivated me to try some more movie poster and so it happened. How did I manage it. How did I successfully potray the same message without a tutorial. You are just about to find out.

CASE STUDY 1 : FINAL DESTINATION 5 POSTER (2011)
My first attempt at this poster. I have previewed the original and OFFICIAL poster for the movie on the left with my version on the right. As you see both look different but similar. How did I do it.
STUDY YOUR INSPIRATION –
I carefully observed the Original poster. The basic idea behind its design. Understand the main and sub components that build the idea in the design. Here key factors being the bridge transforming into a skull. Major and most important aspect that links both are the idea of it falling into the sea portraying the concept of death via the skull image. Now figure out the sub components. Here the couple on the edge of it, the suspension tower and also the bent and twisted railings along the edge with the debris. Once you have your components sorted, next get them. Its always good to have a good set of stock images ready to work with. Once you have your basic components ready, its time for the molding and blending.
LEARNING TO DECODE A WORK PROCESS –
Now that you have your stuff cut out. Move on to the process. How do you think it was made. My first guess – Skull wrapped with the bridge image and may be a 3D modelling tool used to add depth and perspective. I yet don’t know how right I was. But this is how I did it. First I got my main components ready. Picked an image of a skull. Now how do I get the road to fade out into a skull? With no book to play by, I just go for it. Set and place my skull image. Clean it up. No unwanted details, only bold and distinct edges and highlights maintained. I immediately grabbed some cracked mud textures and broken concrete slabs images and began overlaying them. Step by step blending, filling and cropping each image to fill in. I managed to atleast give the skull a concrete and cracked texture. Now I played with various wraps and perspective tools to try and bend the head of the skull to make it appear as if it were flat. My point here – Go with flow. Trial and error method. What’s the CNTRL+Z for? I played with various blend modes, perspective tools till I reached a satisfactory level of similarity. Always look out small loops that will give you a start. After I layed it out, I added dept to the eye sockets by simply enabling emboss and shadows. Simple tricks and I skipped the 3D aspect out. My idea didn’t deliver a 100%, but what the heck, I got me 50% similarity and yes I used my head and built my own work flow. Its times like these when a lack of a step by step snapshot assisted tutorial , that you really open your BOX. Channeling your current knowledge with imagination is also learning. For Ex: I realized that by changing the blend mode of the cracks to Overlay, I achieved a small depth. May not be the thing for this project but may be for the next. This is how you need to look and decode the work flow of an artist. Just give it a shot. No worries, you are not failing at any point. All you are doing is building your thought process and sharpening your creativity based on imaginations and visualization.
NEVER AIM FOR A CLONE-
Come on facts here. Even if I gave you a detailed tutorial of how I did it, each one of us is going to have a different results anyways. My point here – Take advantage and throw your style out here. As you may see, I sorted out the skull and road, but debris? I clipped and cropped a few broken buildings, walls, dirt, pipes and wrapped then and merged them to create my own debris. Copying the same debris in different locations only re sizing and changing the orientation helped me create more debris. Adding the tower and the sea was no challenge. Here’s the twist I took it 1 step ahead by adding a few falling vehicles rather than a couple at the edge. Not only that, I gave it a misty background and rough sea. I completed it out by adding a vintage touch and some grunge textures to the over all product to add some personal style to it.
CASE STUDY 2 : RISE OF PLANET OF THE APES (2011)
My personal favorite. Just because I deviated completely from what the original poster was. This case study offers a whole new path of visual understanding.
- Well, I felt too many elements were involved.
- There was no main focus in the poster.
- It portrayed a kind of story immediately (not a bad thing, but nor a completely good idea).
- Way too much of aligned text and image.
- Unwanted fillers.
Let me explain in comparison to what I did. In view of my first point. Too many elements. Minimalism is the need of the hour. Having so many main features of the movie sequenced in a kinda storyline didn’t make sense to me. Hang on, adding my third point here is that, What the original poster conveys is the basic idea.A guy, a chick, lots of apes and world war in the making. Not fitting for me. I personally believe any poster should have just the right amount of disclosure. Hide it and reveal equally. What I did was eliminating point 2 No focus, I just picked two aspects Rise and Apes and built my concept on it. Also the font I created, I offset the words to build my own movie title. Imagination here too. Believe me I used 4 different fonts for the same header at the bottom. Adding a gradient and a little dept gave it a metal dull and look that delivers a punch. I let the ape be the main focus of the poster and allowed the concept of the revolution by the evolution flow out in the little planet like imagery I added below the ape.I didn’t add any Bokeh effect but added some flares for highlights and also a glossy glass shard cover over the entire image. Kind of a personal touch. Some times it takes way more than decoding to do something. You have to learn to build out of the box with or with out your comfort tools and tricks. This poster gave me confidence that YES I can visually build an idea and effectively deliver it on a digital canvas.
I really hoped this helped you guys. I must insist when I say this – I AM NOT CRITICIZING THE ORIGINAL ARTIST ON THEIR WORK. THIS SOLELY MY PERSPECTIVE OF THEIR WORK. I may be wrong for some, may be right. Its everyone’s way of looking at art. Remember you don’t need books and formal training for a masters in creativity and visual learning, stare and stare till it starts talking. And when it does its time you get those brushes ready.
Just yesterday I stumbled across a link on my twitter feed that said – FITC Toronto Back to the future presentation by James White. Woah! I have been following James White – Signalnoise closely for the past 1 year on twitter. It wasn’t long before I was a fan of his color spectrum, concepts and flare designs. I used to frequently checkout his work on his gallery on his personal website.
James is the one man army who built and runs Signalnoise in Halifax | Canada. Personally I adore his work and style. I have always enjoyed his designs as they had a very unique and creative style. His logo itself speaks so much of his style – The rainbow sun. A few important events that I followed him on were Montreal meets and his recent venture where he generated funds for the victims of Japan by designing a poster which he sold. It ultimately landed becoming the cover for the quake book. James’s work inspires me in so many ways. His designs are fresh, unique, color punched. It was his Japan Poster that inspired me to design a wallpaper which I used to generate funds for the same cause.He takes a lot of inspiration from what he has seen growing up.Yes so now back to the future. What is it all about. I live in India and after watching it only wish I were in Canada to tell James how awesome he is. In the presentation James cracked up, he covered a lot of topics.Starting with What inspires him. How does he build his imagination and ideas.What inspires him to design.What helps him to get better and how he looks at work and re creates his master piece. Most importantly he really put some strong points on for growing and aspiring artist. I personally feel not only designers, visual artist, concept artist should watch this presentation but in fact every person who believes in innovation and creativity.
I personally enjoyed every bit of what James said. It wasn’t long before I flooded my twitter feed with the has-tag #FITC these awesome ideas by James.I liked the way he explained the birth of Signalnoise. How he pursued his personal projects and tried to combine his love for a subject with the love for what he does. Something as simple as taking sketching into a comic book. He constantly focused on how, self learning was so important. He showed very interesting personal projects that actually landed him clients. An important point – You don’t need clients to be good at what you do. He stressed on how a personal style is not wrong and how to deal with it. He was very practical in what ever he said. Basic issues like not having time to pursue what you like and how to deal with it. He really put in a lot of effort into this presentation.Loved it.
Some really kicker lines he put out that caught my attention were:

Design in India is on a constant treadmill of development since the past years. Initially design in evolved in India as basic art which blended with a little concepts from the west. We had the skill but not the tech. Today it’s a totally different ball game. Though we still look upon the west for opportunities and inspiration, we haven’t copied an entire form of art. In fact we had our own renaissance. Due to the lack of tech support, we extensively developed the hand skill. We may have opened doors to platforms like Illustrator and Photoshop years after evangelist in the west were working wonders with it. Still today, we have an art that we define as our own concepts and ideas. Today we are in power with some of the big design lands like Australia, US and Canada.
Over the past few months I scavenged the internet in search for individuals and organizations that shared the same blood thirsty addiction and love for design. It was hard to come upon many but I did find a few. From individuals to various events and conferences DESIGN in India is no longer a quiet profession. Today everyone from a concept builder, visual artist, graphic designer, brand & identity builder and designers in general are few to come across but great in demand. These are the guys who push doors open and step out of the BOX, so turn your concepts, ideas and startups into a reality all within the Digital space.
Whether you are a amateur or a professional or even a student (Like me) stepping out into the design world is not rocket science. Harnessing the power of Social Media, Online technology and tapping your potential to push your creativity and skill to the next level is what is going to let you leave a foot print.

A major confusion with patents, copyrights, and trademarks? Although there may be some similarities among these kinds of intellectual property protection, they are different and serve different purposes. Here’s a quick overview:
Copyright is a form of protection provided to the authors of “original works of authorship” including literary, dramatic, musical, artistic, and certain other intellectual works, both published and unpublished. The 1976 Copyright Act generally gives the owner of copyright the exclusive right to reproduce the copyrighted work, to prepare derivative works (Use it in other projects too), to distribute copies of the copyrighted work, to perform the copyrighted work publicly, or to display the copyrighted work publicly. The copyright protects the form of expression rather than the subject matter of the writing. For example, a description of a object could be copyrighted, but this would only prevent others from copying the description; it would not prevent others from writing a description of their own or from making and using the entity. Copyright is the c encircled.
A trademark is a word, name, symbol or device which is used in trade with goods to indicate the source of the goods and to distinguish them from the goods of others.Trademark rights may be used to prevent others from using a confusingly similar mark, but not to prevent others from making the same goods or from selling the same goods or services under a clearly different mark. Well I was at one recently – Drizzlin
Just a few days ago a friend Jason who works at Drizzlin happened to tweet about a session called Brand and butter for Designers in various fields. No sooner was I trying to locate the office to get there for this session. I happened to get along a buddy of mine – Rishad who is a CG and Animation enthusiast. Friday the 25 around 7.06 PM I walk into Drizzlin’s office! Woohoo! (With no exaggeration ) The team consisting of Deepak – “The Cool Boss” , Heli and Jason greet us guys in. The session #brandandbutter for this week’s theme was Designers. So we waited till all the other designers could pop in. Soon with a little fuel and nuts and a couple of other designers the session (I prefer calling it the Conversation) begun. After a quick introduction of who we were and what the hell we do? And basic stuff like that, ignited a series of topics that left all of us with a lot of Hey what, what’s that site again, Awesome when’s this happening and Interesting nice! From the point of education offered by India and other countries at present to future opportunities, we spoke about what they had to offer in terms of Design, various kinds of art and how different were they. Speaking of design : how is web graphics different from print media designs. To this there was a little difference of opinion but a constructive one. I justified saying color modes and profiling of the image played a key role, whereas Disha : A graphic designer insisted that the profiling didn’t matter, and the printing medium was a key to the accurate color success. A very strong point she brought out was how successful images are when designed on a Mac and printed via the latest tech out in the market. Something every designer struggles with a little! As the conversation flowed with more ideas from Drizzlin ‘s team members and us we soon moved to a interesting combination of Design and social media. We spoke about various events and sessions that were conducted on design in the country. Design Yatra was a discovery for me. I shared other events like Typography day 2011 and Portfolio night that were lined up to hit the city soon. We spoke about how other sites that offered access to such events and so on. Soon we were joined by Kirti : A student at XIC, and also helping Drizzlin out with a little Video editing work. Soon we were talking about video editing platforms and other such stuff. Overall we had really interesting points that were diverse but within the design field. Jason shared a very interesting topic of Animation in India. Rishad shared some interesting information on how he practices his sketches and drawings. Touched on points like who are the contenders in the market at present for animation education, and what the job scenario is. To which Rishad explained how Indian artist and job opportunities for Animation were a little complex.Soon we were joined by Gunjan another (I must insist ) One hell of a guy! He contributed to how the Agencies at present market with clients, he broke down the entire process of building a startup to A B C in a brilliant manner! Jason, Rishad and me had a first hand preview to this amazing crash course in planning something from skeleton level. He shared his inputs on Image theft, brand loyalty and linking the world in a minimalistic manner. He threw every point of his with an example that left us saying : Dude! (And then speechless at times). On a whole a brilliant conversation that bounced of different people on different topics.
In short it was Sharing Learning and Networking! All for free!! Everyone took home something more than just each other’s contact numbers. It was a really interesting evening where strangers with a similar profession or dream line got together to talk design with Drizzlin and its team.
What I really took home that evening would be really difficult to blog about. Either you need to meet me or attend a #Brandandbutter session. But something I want to really highlight is what the Cool boss – Deepak told me! “Pick on an area and be the best at it! Along with the rest too. Focus on that one thing you want to excel in… And leave the employment part of it aside for now. And that is a simple principle of Success!” – Thanks
So that was my interesting encounter with Drizzlin and the #brandandbutter session. Big thanks to the Drizzlin team and all who were a part of it! As I believe… the session may have ended but what the heck! The Conversation has just begun !
#Brandandbutter – I had a taste of it!
What are Droplets?
All you crazy photographers and graphic artist out there… Do you spend hours adjusting, converting and adding water marks to your work? I guess you haven’t discovered “DROPLETS” then! How do you think companies process multiple images with same attributes of image size, resolution, color profile, and frame work? It’s all about batch processing. Photoshop facilitates batch processing of images. That is adding multiple attributes to your image all by dropping them into a droplet.
To work this out you need to be familiar with the actions feature in Photoshop. Actions is a feature in which you record certain steps that you apply to and image and store them for further use. Now droplets are nothing but taking these actions and packing them in a convenient mechanism to use over multiple images.
How does it work?
This is not rocket science at all just follow the steps and save hours and sweat. A droplet when saved will save as a .exe file
Step1: Create an action
If the actions tab is not visible, click on windows and select it from there.
Once you have the actions option click on the icon shown above to select a new action.
Type in a name for the action and leave the rest as it is to the default options.
Hit the Record button.
After this step you need to be really careful. Whatever you do now will be recorded.
To just create a trial action, open up any image, it really doesn’t matter what type.
Now go to the image > mode > Grayscale. This will cause your image to change its color profile to Grayscale. Now click on file> Save as > JPEG. Save it to a desired location. Now its important to stop recording what you have been doing. Go back to the actions dock and click on the stop icon at the bottom.
Now your Photoshop action is ready for batch processing using a droplet.
Step2: Create an Droplet
Click on file> scroll till Automate > Create Droplet.
You will see the following pop out screen. Now enter the following:
1.) Save Droplet in : Select a location to save the droplet file >> choose Desktop
2.) Leave set to Default actions
3.) Click on the Actions dropbox and select the action we just created.
4.) Destination Folder: Select a folder for the output files. Create a new folder on the desktop called Output and save in there.
5.) Leave the rest as it is and click OK on the right.
Your desktop must have something like this:
Now you are ready to use your droplet.
Just in brief: What we have done is basically created a action that converts images to Grayscale and then saves them separately. The action can be used by opening each image individually and then applying the action to it. But now with the droplet you can simply select all the multiple images you want to convert to grayscale and simply drag them over to the Trial.exe icon on the desktop and drop them in it. What will happen is that all these images will automatically convert in Photoshop at a fast rate and save in the Output folder without you having to do anything.
Now enjoy your action at a faster rate. Create droplets to suit your workflow. Record an action where you add a watermark and border or create one in which you compress the image and crop it to a size. Do whatever you wish and droplet them !
How it all began…
Freelancing has always been something I wanted to engage in. The fields of Print and graphic had caught my attention ever since I first started using Photoshop and Illustrator. It all began when a cousin of mine who is a printer by profession, asked me to design a couple of logos for a music event company, ever since then I have received many such opportunities via him to experiment and vent my creativity. Besides the part of me being able to earn small revenue, what these opportunities had to offer were amazing. To begin with, several of these orders were a test of my creativity. Time constrains and design specifications were something I never worried about till date. Deadlines and final finishing was something that I only realized after a couple of rejections. Basically these were the first steps of mine into graphics arena. Besides that, I had opportunities to design graphics and Print media for several college events and volunteer services which I offered to the youth magazine. These platforms helped me explore more options of building my skills. These two years was a period of learning for me.
It wasn’t long before I joined twitter that doors for exploring graphics was thrown open for me. Twitter had so much to offer that today I am a Twitter addict. I have gained tremendous knowledge and skills using twitter. 60% of my ability to build out of the box and take a canvas and transform it into something -I owe to the talented groups and individuals that share it on twitter. Twitter was the first place I actually got to communicate with freelancers from different parts of the world. Soon after I was hooked by the graphic web and network I made a blog. Initially I dedicated it only to Photoshop. But later posted content on various media such as illustrations reviews of graphic softwares and video editing tools. After a fairly long period of sharing and learning, I termed myself as a freelancer on twitter.
Not aware of various factors that were needed to be considered I went out head on. I didn’t have a title or a website just my mail, twitter handle and LinkedIn Profile. Not much happened but later, something sparked. I happened to be introduced to someone on twitter who needed a couple of logos to be designed. This was my first time that I had received a client without a third person. Soon we got on the phone and met up. In a few lines I ended up bagging the order and ultimately getting paid for it. But the reason I am writing this post to tell you how horribly wrong I was in calling myself a freelancer. Confused? Well I was completely unaware of what awaited me ahead. To be more specific here’s what I mean…
Give me brief history of your background…
Ok here’s the very first thing the client asked me. Slightly dazed and confused, I didn’t exactly know what to say. So I rattled out all the history of my growing stages as mentioned above. My very first wrong move. I didn’t have portfolio ready and organized. I didn’t have any history timeline to quote. So I landed up saying a lot that I shouldn’t have said.
What I learnt:
1.) Build a website that showcases your portfolio and contact details and basic bio. For example.
2.) You need to have a title that you go under. For example JCreations or Magikarts. A logo and letterhead is a must.
3.) Have a short summary of your work always ready to explain how skilled you are.
4.) Your portfolio must be accessible at all times.
Show us some of your work and give us a quotation…
This is where I destroyed 80% of my chances. At that time most of my work was on Behance Network. However some of my good work wasn’t there due to technical issues. So I hurried and uploaded everything on Picasa and linked my client to it. Very unprofessional, but I was saving my boat from sinking. When it came to the quotes, I didn’t know how to shoot. Since till date all the payments received was given by my cousin and I never interfered in that area. So I didn’t have an idea what to do. However I managed to convince them into carrying the conversation forward. My luck was really good.
What I learnt:
1.) A portfolio is what you wear to your meeting. Have it ready 24×7. Select your showcase wisely.
2.) Have a separate mail ID to deal with clients to reflect your professionalism.
3.) When a client wants to take the conversation forward grab him tight and pamper him. What I learnt here very importantly is: Prepare a small write up about yourself along with contact details and necessary bio. Along with that prepare a client info sheet. Put this together and mail it to the client. This gives him a picture that you are there and active. You look more professional and the client can also fill in the info sheet which you can collect later when you meet.
4.) The main idea in having a client database is that you have a record for your work which supports your title as a freelancer later.
5.) I didn’t do this so at the end of the day when the client had finished all the work and payment we were both happy, but I didn’t have any proof of my work done for him on paper.
The first meeting….
We decide on a nearby location to meet up and discuss the order. The 2 major mistakes I made was, my location selection and time. My laptop battery died in the process of talking and there were no available options to charge it. The location I selected was very noisy and crowed. The time was late evening and both of us had to hurry after some time.
What I learnt…
1.) Chose your location wisely and pre think about it.
2.) Make sure your hardware is there supporting you all the time and never lets you down.
3.) Save your battery during conversations by hibernating
4.) Silent it is the louder your discussion gets.
Please change this, We don’t want it that way…
Ok after my meet, I had the idea in hand and now I had to begin making the samples. I never gave an estimate and never took an advance or kill fee. Big mistake here. A week into my designing, the client called up and changed the concept. A week’s worth of my time was wasted.
What I learnt…
1.) First get a proper quotation sheet ready which describes your rules and regs.
2.) Make sure you take a kill fee of a small amount so that just in case the client cancels the order, your efforts don’t go unpaid.
3.) Get a deadline set. Be careful here don’t be in a hurry and mess up your schedule.
4.) Mention how many times you are ready to make changes in the samples after you designed them. Some clients expect you to make changes more than 8 times after the second meet. Nothing wrong some make changes till the client is happy, but your quotation should justify your effort here.
5.) Always call up the client and keep him posted on the progress. If early in finishing it, call him up. It only shows how efficient you are.
6.) Another thing that just struck me was, when I the client needed some technical explanation I didn’t know it. However thanks to LinkedIn Groups I managed to connect with a large group of designers who helped me out. So always have a network of people whom you can count on.
Ok the amount is fine when do I pay you, and how will you give them to me?
Finally after several changes and the losses I ran into the final order was ready after 4 seating which each lasted for at least 3 hours. More mistakes happened here. I didn’t have bill ready to give him. I didn’t have a cd rom to burn it on a disc. So I just landed up taking the cash in hand and mailing him the order.
What I learnt…
1.) Have a bill of sale ready with your logo and title.
2.) Mention first itself that no mail transactions will occur.
3.) Either get a pen drive or more professionally burn it on a disc for them.
4.) The bill of sale accounts for your work.
5.) Give them a thank you note and also a feedback form.
6.) Contact them after a week and check if they need any changes in the logos or designs for their site etc. So this way you create a bridge which will bring them o you in future.
7.) Also if you are on sites like LinkedIn ask for a recommendation for your work.
8.) Incase in unavoidable circumstances you have to mail the order. Like in my case where the client dropped his pen drive on the way. I uploaded the order to a mail, but asked him to pay me before I hit the send button. I than allowed him to access his mail and check if he had received the mail before he left.
So this is how a long tiring journey ended up. I however ran into a loss since I had designed more than what he paid me for. But this was an eye opener for me. Now I have begun getting things organized for my further clients. Just to break it down here’s what you’ll need…
1.) A website or Showcase containing bio, contact details and your portfolio.
2.) A title, logo, letterhead, E-mail ID .
3.) A PDF of your history and a client information sheet.
4.) A quotation sheet with all the rules and possible combinations of payments. Importantly types of format provided. Number of seatings for changes, deadlines, and your kill fee.
5.) Suitable locations to meet clients.
6.) A bill of sale ready.
This is how I plan to move on in this field. Everyone has their way I have just shared mine. It may seem right to some or wrong to some. Please comment and share your opinion so I can learn.
Freelancing is not a cake walk. It’s a lot of work. Think about it. Don’t just tag yourself or you’ll land up spelling it wrong like me.
Adobe making a buck on Cs versions?
Photoshop Cs5 VS Photoshop Cs4
Finally after reviewing several features and going over various content zones and forums, pulling in on either one of the Cs versions was tough. The Cs series is definitely a fully loaded package that caters in an overwhelming manner. With new advanced features and enhanced tools, every version upgrade has a whole new horizon. But is really worth upgrading for a couple off tools? Seriously 3D, till date artist used external softwares to create their 3D matter and worked with effects on Photoshop. At the same time Cs versions have packed a punch so hard that these softwares don’t stand a chance anymore. Every time a Cs version upgrades, it happens in two steps. New and repair. The new deals with the upgrade of the interface tools, brushes, plugins, and blenders. Repair deals with upgrading and enhancing earlier defects in already present tool sets. However Photoshop draws a line very clear with its version. Presently if Cs 5 and Cs4 are in discussion, then Cs 3 is definitely out of the league. Just within an upgrade of 2 versions Cs3 doesn’t stand a chance of comparison with the present two. No matter what the upgrade is or what the tools are, seeing how it caters to the user’s needs and its functionality in terms of how often will it be used plays a more important role.
To break things up, let’s start with what Cs5 offers that Cs 4 and lower versions don’t offer.

Very handy in cutting out images from background.

Finally to the point who wins? Theoretically Cs5.But get down to user facts. Yes from the point of Photography tools Cs5 is worth the buck. With a hand full of new tools that really burn this version to glory, the rest all require a strong backing with the hardware. Considering the system requirement and technical aspects Cs5 may just cut off at this point. Stability will be major issues on junior systems. For a universal upgrade to such high Technical standards may take some time. Also this version sees a lot of features to support final processing and imaging. In addition to that certain tools like the puppet wrap and intelligent background filling Cs4 gets nailed. But finally Cs4 or Cs5?
It’s Cs5.Not because of the advanced 3D aspects but because of the major processing support and enhanced plugin service upgrade it provides. With all the final processing made more easier to link with Bridge and Lightroom,Cs5 deserves the spot light for now.

In this post I have handpicked some retouched photographs.Retouching today has a wide application and is almost used by everyone today on amateur basis.While beginners play off with Layer mask and then brushing,retouching photographs requires a lot of skill,perception and knowledge of Photoshop.Right from spot healing,cropping,patch to adjustment of highlights and shadows,every artist has his own action set planned.From individual level to professional one’s this field sort great source of income that doesn’t come easy.Pre-conceptions are that retouching is for magazine faces.But however today there are various sites offering retouching for your personal pictures as well.Its an art most Designers and artist try to grasp,but only the one’s with the perspective vision accomplish.Today learning to retouch photographs is not all that difficult if you know the ABC of Photoshop.Here I have put 3 tutorials to learn retouching.Go ahead an experiment,it’s not all that tough.But always remember to provide a before-after preview to your work .
Breaking it down to the basics
Although there are several ways to retouch photographs,there are elementary steps that are achieved by different artist in different ways.The basic idea of retouching a photograph is not to change the original aspects but to clear the unwanted ones.Right from spots,marks,age lines to dark circles ,retouching is applied for an overall makeover.
Major spots marks and lines and first removed using the spot healing tool.This tool has to be used with a small brush size to maintain the colour unity of the face.At times where the section is badly affected like a scar or rash the patch tool suits best.However while using a patch tool,care must be taken that the generated patch is within the same shadow or highlighted area.Avoid a distant patch as it gets obvious.
Now adjust the highlights and shadows for Image>Adjustments…Remember never play around with the brightness and contrast unless necessary,since the change overall image including background.All major and minor areas of fault should be rectified by now.
Now duplicate the layer.Select the underlining layer and apply Gaussian blur to it.Make sure the basic elements like eyes and lips are visible to a decent respect.
Now add a layer mask to the top layer.Select the layer mask and brush it with a soft brush of opacity 60%.You will now notice a smooth result as the lower Gaussian layer is revealed.
Make sure not to brush the eyes and lips in the mask.It will result in them going blurred.Play around and experiment to suit your level of requirement.
